expect to cry a lot in Clannad (well, Clannad~After Story)
Cry baby!!! Ok it is a little sad. Idk despite all the violence and physco killer thing I think Elfen lied is one of the saddest if somewhat confusing the first time thru animes I've ever seen. Especially the extra episode not released in engrish.

Elfin Lied was pretty sad, but saikano was the only thing to near tear me up.
The only thing I can remember watching that was even semi-interesting and not ruined by Otaku (*** Haruhi ><) was Gantz. Gore, Nudity, just all out crazy *** up. Manga is probably better, though.
In addition, I'd add Kodomo no Jikan to the list. The first season is subbed and there's a few episodes from the second season out (Might be more, but it's been a while). The "OMGPEDO" people probably wouldn't like it, but I find it quite entertaining. In addition, if you can scrounge up English scans (Or read Japanese), it is the best manga I've read to date. Closely seconded by Love Hina.

Actually it pretty much followed the manga with all that lol. Until the final stage then they forced an ending. And of course the manga goes way way way farther
Kemeko Deluxe - An instant classic in my book. I nearly pee'd myself from laughter while watching the first episode. This anime kinda reminds me of FLCL btw.
Hajime no Ippo/New Challenger - Its an anime about boxing, the fight scenes are amazing and even the fillers are pretty good.
Hatsukoi Limited - Its an anime about first loves (kinda what the title translates to), I feel that if you enjoyed love hina you'll probably like this as well, and also the ending is not as disappointing as the author's first anime (Ichigo 100%)
Code Geass/R2 - I know this was mentioned before but you HAVE to watch this, you won't be disappointed.

Damn I totally forgot about Welcome to the N.H.K. that one has ffxi in it too (or well, a non-copyrighted version of it).

Saikano made me tear up, but the ending to the manga for Elfen Lied made me outright cry.
If anyone hasn't seen Akira, its an anime movie made back in 1988. It's pretty impressive considering when it was made and became a classic.
I still have the VHS
Just watched Dead Leaves last, Bleach, Lady Death.
I love Hellsing, Ghost in the Shell, End of Evangelion, Slayers, Dragonball GT, Blue Seed, Satoshi Kon & Hayao Miyazaki movies, Darkstalkers, Metropolis, Peach Girl, Ninja Scroll, etc.
Been meaning to watch Galaxy Angel, also the new Astro Boy movie coming to theatres this month or so looks good.
I saw this one anime a long time ago on MTV i think (or scifi channel, i forget). It was like 14+ years ago. The quality of the anime was like Akira, I think (maybe i'm wrong), and the story line was as epic as FFVII. I remember it was a group of people (guys and girls), and there was a corporation ruling the world (or at least apart of a war to do so), and the team was fighting for truth and justice (maybe). There was a lot of science fiction about it, can't remember anything else about it except one scene were they are together on a road, trying to avoid being seen, yet they were trying to approach "them". I don't remember much about it; could have been a two parter, or just one movie... But it felt like a movie, not a series. Ever since, I have been an unfulfilled anime fan. Elfen Lied, pretty good. Princess Mononoke; some epic, but totally opposite direction. Akira, nice, but not the future I'm thinking of. Seriously... can anyone read my mind?
It would do what years of therapy cannot. When I saw it, it "reminded me of the future". Lol if that makes any sense... I wonder if it was even real. (or still in this timeline)
Oh, since the departing from that fateful evening having the most epic anime experience... I can only say one comes remotely close to hitting me as well.
Rah Xephon is a *** amazing series. That's my input for this thread. Someone please help me!
All these Anime mentioned are good choices, although some of them i haven't watched. *notes down some of them* >.>
One that hasn't been mentioned yet i think and is mainstream is "One Piece". One Piece is a very good anime and has a good manga as well... you might have already watched/read it though... I recommend Ghost in the Shell, Tenchi Series and Love Hina if you're into the love story kind of stuff.

I loved Hatsukoi Limited! Ichigo 100% is one of my favorite animes/mangas! Mizuki Kawashita is probably one of my favorite mangakas.....her new one is Ane Doki, if you like her work, definately check it out!
btw, I know this is for anime, but if anyone here reads manga as well, should check out Bakuman. Its done by the two who created DeathNote, but it's totally different. Its about these 2 guys trying to make it as mangakas (ppl who make mangas '-')
Hellsing, Record of Lodoss War, Love Hina, Death Note, Haruhi Suzumiya, Witch Hunter Robin, Escaflowne, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Tenchi Muyo, Cowboy Bebop... um there are a few^^
^This is the only anime mentioned so far with which I've been impressed. Then again I'm not really the best person to be asking. All my friends like anime but I just think it's mostly kind of gay. I always try when they get a new movie/series. I always watch it w/ them and keep an open mind but it's just not my cup of tea most the time. (And btw I've seen everything on this list except Haruhi Suzumiya and Tenchi Muyo.)
Not reading manga, but my very first comic so I guess I'll move onto manga soon enough. Sonomaa's Anna Mercury ***from BG is way too awesome to resist. lol
Right now I am watching "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (When Cicadas cry)"
Description:
After moving into the quiet town of Hinamizawa, Maebara Keiichi spends his days blissfully in school often playing games with his local friends. However, appearances can be deceiving. One fateful day, Keiichi stumbles upon news of a murder that had occurred in Hinamizawa. From this point on, horrific events unfold in front of Keiichi, as he soon learns his close friends may not be all that they seem. Based on the amateur mystery game by 7th Expansion, the story is told in a series of different scenarios.
This Anime can be soooo cute and so horrific at the same time. It's confusing at first but in the end it really worth it imo.
To find new Anime and keep track of what you are watching/plan to watch I suggest:
I would recommend also the first season of The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi, but the second season ONLY if you become a hardcore fan because of the "Endless Eight" arc. Time loops, you watch the same episodeeight times. It is literally a chore to watch. I am not joking. [Maybe just watch the first, second, and last episodes of the arc?]

ok...I'm getting more and more interested in this endless eight...

lol when i watched puny puny poemi i didn't even read half the subs, go by too fast and the fansub i had overlapped the subs so you could barely read them even when pausing it.

actually yeah me2. So its like groundhog day?
As Kaylea, Sammitch, and I already stated, you're watching the same content over again, just from different perspectives with minor changes like clothing and what they say. Only for the more hardcore to watch imo (like me XD). I've read the novels so I was compelled to complete it.
I'm glad to see that they are finishing Inuyasha. Hopefully they don't re-tell the beginning every other 5 episodes.
My roommate was pleased when I told him about it. I dabbled into the anime years ago but when I heard that they just ended it abruptly and the manga wasn't complete I promptly stopped. I guess I should plow through the 558 chapters now that the manga is complete.
im to lazy to write description of the ones i like bleach, shakugan no shana, death note, chrono crusade, darker than black, claymore, tears to tiara...cant remember other good ones off top my head
Gotta agree with most of the choices here - Can't see any I'd particularly avoid. In addition to those, though - If you can find anywhere that shows/hosts it, Time of Eve (Eve no Jikan, I think) is a really short (6ep's) but pretty interesting series. If you can bear with lowish quality streams I believe crunchyroll might have it.
Otherwise, I recently found Eclipse started releasing eps of Seitokai no Ichizon. Funny in a childish, Love Hina/Fumoffu sorta way, although it's only just started airing. They've also got a few other gems like (previously mentioned) Claymore/Code Geass (although, only series 2)/FSN in their archives.

*EDIT* To people who have watched, [gg] or Frostii?
I've never had experience with Frostii, but [gg] left a bad impression when I got Geass R1 from them. Usually crude speedsubs with many lost-in-translation phrases/jokes, not to mention random messages left in by the group themselves and at times overlapping sentances. On the upside, they are fast - if you're desperate to see something or not bothered about exact translations/quality, they do get the job done. Perhaps they've improved since, but I can't say I went back to them for any releases to see.

plowed through them some time around 2007ish8ish and followed it ever since anime ended sub/dub.
you will not like the ending though.. it felt rushed... freaking mag and editors rushed her to finish. (Rumiko Takahashi) because of this the ended sucked ball sacks. it could have been better if she had 10-15 more after naruku chapters.
