I understand that but my point is that even if you scale subs you're not scaling content. I've played FTP games that have more development than XI. ***, diablo II was getting more content per update 10 years later on a game that never had a monthly fee.

It feels like the 3 guys one the dev team are throwing darts after a *** 3 month period of partying and go:

"uhhh.... 10 more levels of uhhh monstrosity... uhhh... give them bst pets scale to your weapon now and uhhh.... *** it that's good enough"

There's not justification (to me) to give them $15/month for that. Regardless of the disparity in sub sales, if SE wanted my money they would do something worth it. It's like there being an internet show that gives me 1 episode a month for 20$ or a rival company that gives me an episode a week.

I just wish SE would learn how to run events.

All of this cutsy-wutsy, lets-put-on-a-bathing-suit-and-clap-for-an-npc BS is terrible. Most of the time, the event rewards are just as lame as the means of getting them. Occasionally there'll be a reward worth obtaining, but not very often.

Before I started playing XI many years ago, I played Ultima Online, and although UO went downhill a long time ago, the events were always fun, whether they were seasonal events like Halloween and Christmas, or special events like city invasions. Participation was usually based on fighting mobs, and could be done solo or in groups. The rewards were always fun and challenging to get, were useful to have, were usually different from year to year, and most importantly, couldn't be obtained any other way.

I think the most fun event I've ever participated in was the first "Treasures of Tokuno" event in UO, in which players could kill any kind of mobs in the Tokuno lands and would occasionally be rewarded with an item, ranging from armor paint to low-tier artifact-quality weapons and armor, most of which were worth having on their own. But you could also turn in 10 of those items to an event-NPC in exchange for a higher-tier reward of your choice. The event was mostly a grind of mob-killing, but it was so much fun - it was exciting to kill a mob and see a system message saying "For your valor in combating the fallen beast, a special artifact has been bestowed on you."

If SE would start hosting events of that caliber, I'd be a happy camper.

Complaining about small patches between bigger updates?
Yes since they basically cut down everything non SoA related. If old stuff was still worth wasting hours of your lifetime it wouldn't be a big deal, but as they decided to make the game Final Adoulin XI and they're not able to keep up with the release of content in the slightest(for reasons no one would have doubted if asked before) things are pretty bad.

SoA was released horribly, continued worse, and gods know where it's going.

Except: they charge the same as companies that actually keep up with the content cycle.

Square was a company that was run as "give the gamer what they want and hire people who know something about gaming and the mentality". The company is now run with a "push the product with as much profit as possible regardless of player satisfaction".
Welcome to the video game industry in 2013.

I cannot talk about too many companies as my knowledge is concentrated on a very specific part of the industry, but if you ask any professional who attends any of the worldwide biggest video game meetings (E3, TGS and other big yearly meetings), they will all tell you that Japanese companies and more specifically Square Enix are in their own bubble.

The company is led by people who are here to make money, they have absolutely 0 knowledge of video games outside of sale numbers. I wish I could avoid being extreme and saying this, but it's the unfortunate truth, even more so for Square Enix (if anyone has been paying attention to the company as a whole during the past 6 months/year, it's down right scary).

Sometime, you have people like Yoshida who manage to have their word on a game and manage to salvage it from the graveyard, but even them cannot make miracles if they are surrounded by higher ups that only see sale numbers and completely stop him from doing "what's right".

Matsui is an issue in himself and also because of how SE works (he's working on FFXIV at the same time, talking about quality work...). He's still a nobody for me, I cannot take this guy seriously and seeing what he's doing, I'll never take him seriously.

This is literally the reason as to why everyone jumped off the SE ship during the 00's. Some of them may have done mistakes (sup Sakaguchi) but still, the company has been plagued for over a decade already.

Nothing is more tired than these arguments that people have been making for more than half a decade. Get some new material.

On topic I'm not sure a merge is around the corner. Things are quiet right now but that is to be expected with the content from the last major update being all but exhausted for a lot of players.

Still, Phoenix peaks around 1400 online during JP prime(and SE doesn't care if half of those people are afk) and there's still plenty of congestion in instanced areas. Hell, my group had to wait to enter Meebles the other week.

I wouldn't expect them to make any decision regarding this until after the next content update. Then you'll get a real idea of who is still playing.

I miss the old days :(

I miss having that ultimate goal to reach level 75.

I miss the feeling of been aggroed and dieing, and having to wait for a raise because EXP was precious to you.

I miss having to run for miles to get to the next town because you couldn't warp around so easily and Chocobos were lifesavers.

I miss seeing that one person stood in town who looked like a god with the best gear while 99% of people didn't.

I miss the feeling of accomplishment getting your first artifact or relic equipment.

I miss the many social linkshells full of newbies asking questions and needing help all the time. (I was one of those who ENJOYED helping others get their subjob items and stuff)

I miss camping NMs outside, that feeling when you finally see it pop and claim over competition.

I miss running my old dynamis linkshell, finally clearing the city runs after many mistakes/practice, then moving onto Icelands/Dreamlands and feeling awesome but afraid of that inevitable wipe.

I miss when jobs had equipment that made them look like the job they were playing.

I miss old school exp parties, not because of the killing, but because of the usual banter.

I miss levelling up and feeling the need to DING or WOOT in LS Chat so everyone can appreciate the effort.

I miss when missions were challenging and had good storylines (COP).

I miss mass events like Divine Might, they were killer and I remember killing the last Ark Angel only for time to run out and feeling the despair of the alliance.

I miss having things to do. And even when I couldn't be bothered and just wanted to chat or help others, there were GOOD people who appreciated the help and regarded you as their mentor and friend.

What I miss most is the magic and spirit of FFXI. :(

I miss pay phones, dial up internet, level cap 75, AOL 3000 free hours discs. And using "I" over and over to respond to a thread.

I agree with you however, you didn't need to make a giant list to prove your point. Could have just said I miss 75 era FFXI.

I like making lists when i'm tired? It's just the way that I felt like expressing myself on this occasion. Is it really that much of a crime to make a list of stuff that I used to enjoy about FFXI?

This is just proving one of my points, I don't find many good people anymore, just players who want to rip on others for the smallest things. Believe me, that list could have been three times longer at least. It's just a small representation of why players no longer want to play and why server numbers are plummeting.

No but the problem is you are going to find terrible people in any online community it is part of the population.

It is part of the MMO culture for some people to get to end game as fast as possible then *** at people that don't have "certain" items that aren't needed to do events.

What I meant was.. players back in the 75 era, they wanted to make friends with others a lot more. I still have many of those people on my facebook and stuff, and they ask me sometimes how FFXI is.

Back in them days, I could gladly spend all day just chatting to people in my social ls because people were so nice, friendly and trusting. They didn't mind if people were having full blown conversations over LS chat, and they encouraged players to come together to do the smallest of quests that didn't really need that many players just so they had a reason to hang around.

Nowadays it's like... you log in.. say hi. Someone might say hi back, if they ain't afk/busy, then that's it. You wait for 20 mins, someone else comes on, they say hi, you say hi back. You join a new linkshell and try to talk to people, try to have conversations, but no one wants to know, they are too into grinding delve or skirmish or whatever and socialising is just a waste of time.

It's like.. when I came back from a break and I went to a Voidwatch group who was getting clears. I was being friendly and joking around, handing out cookies to players. Near the end of the run, some guy who claims to be super elite... says I need to shut the eff up, and I just don't stop talking, and I have no idea what I'm doing. All I was doing was trying to be friendly and socialize while doing the voidwatch clears.

That's just one incident, I seen many players like this who just refuse to socialize because its an inconvenience, and back in the pre 75 era, you had players like that also, but it wasn't as apparent because there were a hell of a lot more casual players. Now that most of the playerbase has come down to the truly loyal, hardcore fanbase, the social aspect has been thrown right out of the window... So I would just stand there in Seekers... and the only way I could get a conversation was to /yell about how quiet it is.

While we all quit FFXI, the people I met on FFXI no more than 1/2 years ago are still people I play with on other games, or still discuss about FFXI with.

Either you meet the proper people, or you don't, whether you meet them in 2004 when CoP comes out or in 2013 when Adoulin comes out is irrelevant.

What exactly am I focused on ? I don't put much energy into my replies or actions in regards to the games life. It's about on par with your negative view on it, just a different perspective. I see you shout all the time in response to people or post here. Does that mean you put more energy into it than me?

Lmao there were so many posts bashing XIV for having same issue as SoA FFXI in this thread already, sadly even though XIV is same linear progression crap with 0 longevity, it's still slightly better than SoA XI in terms of content longevity. Nobody's praising XIV, it's more like comparing 2 rotten apples and pick a better one.

It takes 3 hours(or less) for an avg gamer to obtain the best weapon in SoA FFXI, it takes 6hr(or less) for an avg gamer to obtain relic weapon in XIV. 6>3. The difference is that at least you still have a bit more stuff to do after relic in XIV, you get nothing else to do in XI after delve.

Pre-Abyssea FFXI>post-Abyssea FFXI>>>>>>>>>>>FFXIV>SoA FFXI in terms of content longevity. No matter how much you hate FFXIV, it's hard to deny that SoA FFXI is even worse than FFXIV.
