Texas joins California in offering schools option of online only learning into November.

Quote:
Texas on Friday gave public schools permission to keep campuses closed for more than 5 million students well into the fall as the state scrambles to contain one of the largest resurgences of the coronavirus in the country.

California also issued strict guidance that makes it unlikely that many schools will resume in-person instruction this fall, raising the likelihood of empty classrooms in the country’s two biggest states despite President Donald Trump’s demands that schools welcome back students at the start of the school year.

The changes in Texas were announced hours before the state set a new daily record for virus deaths, with 174, and reported more than 10,000 confirmed new cases for a fourth consecutive day. It also follows a backlash from teachers and parents who criticized Texas’ earlier timeline that had students returning to classrooms by August or September as rushed and reckless.

Under the new guidelines, Texas schools could hold online-only instruction for up to the first eight weeks of the school year, potentially pushing a return to campus in some cities until November. That includes Dallas and Houston, where school leaders concerned about the surge of COVID-19 cases have postponed the first day of classes until after Labor Day.

I don't know why they don't just say the Fall semester, baby steps I guess.

We have known since the beginning of this that the economy couldn't get going fully again until we figured out child care. We haven't figured it out yet. So when the press secretary gets out there and says the science supports fully reopening schools so kids can attend in person classes everyday, she is lying. The science does not support that, because there is more to schools than just the students. They are completely ignoring the role of teachers and it doesn't work.

If it just comes down to teachers and their fears, then have a TV/monitor set up in the classrooms and the teacher can remote into it from home?

It's like... you can't put 30 animals in one room with a tv and expect them to learn a god damn thing, or not kill each other.

I don't think any intelligent parent would go for that ***either. You're going to put my daughter in a room with 29 deviants and no supervision? Oh hell no.

Again, you seem to have an abnormally high regard for our current teachers. My experience in school, all of it including college, was quite different. I once had a parent/teacher conference called on me because I, "corrected the Spanish teacher too much." That's because, she was a moron who didn't even know how to speak Spanish. There is a reason why on an international scale the US education system keeps sliding downhill and it's not due to not enough money gong to the schools.

All they have to do is deliver the lesson, answer a few questions and grade the papers. Exactly all they do when they are standing in front of the kids now, since they aren't allowed to discipline kids these days anyhow. They can do all these things from a video monitor.

What do you think they do now? I guess you have not seen the news the past few years where 16 yr olds are attacking teachers in ***schools and if teacher dare touch a kid who is acting like a gang member, the media goes nuts and they lose their job.

Obviously not every school situation is the same. That's why they can't just do a blanket everyone must open.

It's still very much a class situation that has been building for generations and there's no quick fix for.

All these "powerful" people have no issue because their kids are in private school with only 10 kids in a class and they're "well behaved"

It almost sounds like you don't want there to be a solution so it all, "burns down." Like you're rooting for the collapse of our current society.

In 100% honesty. It does need to be burned down. Real talk. The whole thing doesn't work. Full stop.

It's only functional because there is no options. And it's barely functional at that. I marvel at how people just accept that it is what it is.

What bomb? Is this a capitalism thing? Our schools get more money than any educational system on the planet. Perhaps instead of begging for new school levies each season, they should do some investigating into the local school administrations and see where all that lottery/casino billions is going.

You really need to come to the understanding that you are the tinfoil hatter on this one in particular.

Unless you have some master plan that's better than what we have and you are storing it under your bed, waiting for the right moment to unveil it. Bottom line, people need to have solutions before burning down what is working. Working well in your opinion or not.

That's like screaming systemic racism or white privilege, it's too broad. You can never fix something unless you can actually see it, touch it, label it, put a name on it.

If you just say, "the whole of society needs to burn and begin anew" it's like, all of it? Family structure? Marriage? Home ownership? Having to apply yourself for success? Purchasing food from stores? manufacturing? Which part, exactly, needs addressed first?

Just saying, "burn it all down" with absolutely no basis for restructuring or what it might look like is literally what created the Soviet gulag.

To sum it up as easily as possible. The idea that everything is for maximum profit at any cost. Including human sacrifice. Including children.

But killing children for the mother's life convenience is ok? You gotta do better than pull the "for the children" heartstrings in this convo.

Our society shows on a daily basis that a child's life does not mean any more than an adult's. It just depends on who is the ones doing the killing. So, the deaths matter if they can be used for political posturing, nothing more.

You are basically proclaiming that if children return to school, that we as a society are necessarily sending them to their graves. There are a TON of people who simply don't agree with this. Children risk exposure to possibly life threatening viruses, communicable illnesses, physical attacks, injuries, infections every time they go to school, not just now. What, exactly, are we to be waiting for? A cure?

Ok so how do we reverse the course of human history and make the exchange of goods and services not require some form of currency. What is the alternative?

Waiting for our entire nation to grow up and start acting like adults instead of reeeeeeing at the top of their lungs about their freedoms.

As soon as the moron population starts doing the right thing, we can go back to "normal". if everyone "Man's up" right now and puts on a damned mask the kids can probably go back to school in September.

And I'm not being snarky with that question, trust me. I'd loooooooove to wake up tomorrow and not require money to get the new computer I need, as I have none.

You cannot fathom how gleeful I'd be if the world turned into Middle Earth and we all lived in Hobbit homes, raised our own food, grew our own "pipe weed" (legally) and just got tanked, smoked all day and hung out as pals. That would be heaven to me.

Well *** just cut to that, skip all the anti-establishment, fight-the-man ***. Even though I don't think masks will help THAT much, if it makes the people who DO think they will feel more comfortable and stop hiding in their basement til it all blows over, I'm all for mask mandates. Long as the gubment supplies like, a mask voucher to buy the good ones. Those aren't cheap.

See they WON'T do it, so, it only leaves the "fight the man" option. Quit literally. "the man" the orange one. His base are the ones that are (most not all) of the problem.

It's circular. If we do this, this will happen, but they won't do this, so we have to do that, but they won't do that so we have to do this. It never leads anywhere.

Oh I get it, but in defense of Orange Slice and his followers, the Democrats the past 3 years didn't exactly set a precedent that would lend anyone in Trump Camp to believe they were not capable of taking to what equals a natural disaster, twisting it, using it to their political advantage. The media has more than proven which side they are on, so it really shouldn't shock you when Trump thinks that some of the medical community's assessments with the help of the media may be over exaggerated to assist in the ONE thing Trump was going to get re-elected on; the economy.

Disclaimer: Now I'M not saying I think this is a hoax or anything remotely like that, I'm simply saying, you'd have to literally be insane to not at least see, based on the actions of the Democrats and their media outlets, why someone may be inclined to see some of it as fear mongering with an agenda.

Trump should've used the defense act to make a billion N95 masks, forced everyone to wear them for 2 months and then hung up the mission accomplished banner. It would've been over.

And on the chance that it didn't work? and masks proved to do absolutely nothing? Then we would be exactly where we ended up anyway.

I agree, but you and I know, if he had and it did not work, the media and Democrats would have screamed about the time/money he wasted when he should have done some other thing they have not thought of yet. He cannot win, no matter what he does.

That's the fundamental disconnect. It doesn't have to be about winning. Do the right thing for the right reason.

If it doesn't work. eat the L and try something else. The only thing 100% certain to fail is what we did. Nothing.

I don't agree we did nothing. China deliberately hid this for months, told nobody, then even after it came out tried to deny it's severity for a couple more months, with the help of the WHO.

Trump would have literally had to have a crystal ball to know what was the right thing to do and when to do it. No president would have handled this well, none of them.

The only thing, literally, that could have been done to basically stop this is if China had informed the world immediately and ALL travel to and from China had been stopped immediately. Otherwise, once it spread out via air travel, everyone was screwed. Some countries more so than others based on demographics/population density.
