Looks like definition 3 fits here. Pretty sure FFXI is a religion to some of us and those people are sacrificing themselves to it to please their electronic god.
Using the word addict is more appropriate. Barely.... Even then, the fix is still there, some folks are just bored with the high, because they smoked their 3 pounds of MJ too quick and it's not hitting as hard anymore, and it's time to find a new drug or take a break then.

"the victim of a hoax"

It describes what you are doing perfectly, whether you agree with it or not. Being a "victim" does not always entail the seriousness that you are trying to push with it. The fact it is a game we are discussing should give enough context to how to interpret the level of severity I am associating with the word victim.

Defending a lack of content with, "well, you play the game to much" is weak defense and it is a form of victim blaming. I am sorry if this upsets you.

First time in 7 years they have not had a return home campaign for 11/11, and they aren't even saying why. Maybe they were too popular for their own good.

I could fully understand the use of 'victim' if the game was brand new and had zero content like lets say Anthem. FFXI is nearly 20 years old, yes 20, things dont last forever and we are pretty lucky that XI is still going. If you think that the content wouldn't stop or slow right down to a drop you are a fool.

Just in case no one wants to read the last couple of pages to figure out wtf these guys are talking about.

I made up the last sentence. the rest are real. I don't know what's funnier. The inability of SE to deliver on their word or the people who defend them when they don't.

New story content and a new (if admittedly pointless) battlefield is a relatively large amount of content for the current dev team.

Mentor/assist chat probably took a decent bit of time to get to a functional point too.

Whether the content they're providing was a good use of time is a completely different conversation. But it DOES exist.

At one point they even banned you because you afked on SMN and game mechanics were/are still set to auto attack with your SMN pet out by SE's design to attack what is attacking you. That's why they started de spawning some mobs and making them level up.

Actually no, mob despawning had nothing to do with summoner pets or the like. It goes way way waaaay the hell back to the early days when the bulk of North American players didn't even have their first level 75 yet. Mob despawning was implemented specifically as an anti-griefing / anti MPK tool. Before normal mobs despawned you could MPK people by training hoards of agressive mobs to their location and dying on top of them. Additionally, there were huge problems with leveling zones ( this is back when people actually had leveling parties and invited black mages to them so they could magic burst off the skillchains). Zoning into Yhoater Jungle, Garliage Citadel, or Crawlers nest was almost immediately met with instant death because someone trained a bunch of goblin smithys, knight crawlers, or siege bats to the zone. TRAIN TO ZONE was a common shout, and if your experience camp was in the path you had to stop what you were doing... often for 5-10 minutes at a time and wait for the mobs to reset.

There were obvious implications at any notorious monster camp too, resulting in much griefing over NMs with contested drops. It got to the point the GMs got fed up with the calls and the devs implemented despawning. Coincidentally, it was beastmasters who were most affected by the change, not summoners. Because up until then they were mostly a solo class, relying on charming pets and sicing them on their targets. After the change as soon as they released their pet it despawned, crippling the job entirely. The solution was for s-e to implement jug pets, and we all know how much of a history jug pets have with players and their dissatisfaction of the way they were implemented. Essentially forced upon them without their desire because their class got hit in the crossfire.

Sorry for the rambly history rant. I just felt that was worth mentioning.
Nope you forgot/never knew when SE gave us a warning as level creep happened and people could AFK all night on SMN with pet out and get agro and get free drops. What you're talking about did happen years before what I was talking about.
It had to do with getting avatarites or geodes when ToM staves and others were a big thing.

Regardless of what any of us think, the fact they are adding this at all shows they have long-term goals for the game and have seen a lot of people coming back.

No, it just shows they're adding filler content once in a while to appease the masses. The novice network is literally just fluff that a handful of people will benefit from, since most "new" players are just the latest wave of RMT or people starting a new account to feed their addiction after doing something stupid and getting banned. I said last month not to get your hopes up too high because they never mentioned anything specific regarding a form of content or battle system. I don't know why people were expecting one.

I still love FFXI. played for 19 years straight. Even though I haven't mastered many jobs or content, I have to say I had my fun with the game. Met some incredible people and met some real butt jerks. Had my moments when I rage quit and had my moments when I was THE HERO in my LS for a while. I'll never forget when my party almost wiped to Alexander Prime. I was PLD and last one standing with Alex at 1% hp or less. I got killed by tp move, so we assumed we lost but I had a reraise on. Got up and shield bashed it one time for the win! My party and LS went completely crazy and we laughed so hard but excited as hell. That was one busy month for me as I had to help everyone with that fight. It made me a hero though. Great times.

Anyway, I hope this game can stay around as long as it can. I don't play FFXIV, but I have a feeling the two games will be around for years to come and both will probably go into the sunset together when the time comes.

can't argue with the logic, but I fear their analysis makes them think new PLAYERS are coming in, when in reality the vast majority of any new subs are either new soldiers in the RMT army or people adding their own personal alts. Sure, new accounts are being started, but I seriously doubt that even half of those accounts are truly people new to the game.

I've personally helped (sub job, trusts, Rhapsodies start) a good handful of new or returning players in the last few weeks. People who either never played before, or haven't played in a long time.

There are a lot of new players / returnees / 14 players, you just don't play with others in content returnees would be playing or help when you see shouts.
