The debate is ages old... since they released both jobs, I'm sure. At this point in the game's lifespan... we should all be smart enough to realize both have thier uses, for different party formations against different monsters.

You cant ever say one is better than the other because it's entirely situational.

That's one of the smartest things you've ever said on these forums, but you still managed to sound like an elitist ***.

And... who are you again?

It can hold hate so well XD

I think another true tank should have been made at some point but I don't think we'll see it now. I say 'true' tank because only one of the jobs that we use as a tank was made to tank from day 1 and it's role hasn't changed, and that's PLD.

WAR was a tank early on but it's tanking ability was easily surpassed by PLD. NIN wasn't meant to tank but it was pushed into that position by the player base because lets face it, it's ability to mitigate damage if played well enough and with good support makes for an awesome tank. Also when making an XP party and there's no PLDs looking my next choice is always Ninja over everything else.

SAM can tank some but their potential for damage is far greater than their tanking ability. BLU has a pretty good set of tools to tank, but apart from solo/lowman how often is a BLU invited to tank in XP parties after level 30 or even earlier?

RDM is a beast, I'll give it that...it can tank many things, but who invites a RDM to tank in an XP party lol.

I'm not denying any other jobs of their tanking ability but I think SE should have added another job that had a clear role as tank from day 1 and was given the necessary gear and abilities to be able to tank and keep hate as well as PLD.

Bad PLD > Bad NIN
Good PLD > Good NIN
Amazing PLD < Amazing NIN

Can you use Atonement productively?

Yes => Paladin
No => Red Mage

Can you evade productively?

this made me lulz, with the new ASA pants having movement speed+ I would trust most of my blm friends to tank over some of the pld's/nin's I know.

i second this Ninja takes skill to play. where Paladin is pretty much a straight forward job that doesnt take MUCH skill to master. Personally I profer Ninja for everything.

Close topic. PLD is best tank for majority of things.

PLD was made for tanking

NIN was not made for tanking

I like NIN better.

PLD is better though....

Like that other guy said "Situationx3"

But over all PLD > NIN >_< (Unfortuanetally).

NIN not made for tanking my ***, they have things that help ninja keep hate, but people refuse to use them. They try to take the cheap way out, which ruins the job over all.
Far as I know it, NIN and PLD are not the only two tanking jobs in the game, or the only ones capable of it. Theres a few other jobs in the game that can do it, just takes dedication, time and pratice. Most of all people who are willing to do it.

Lol this thread reminded me of a post i read in the Alla PLD forums.

"You know you've been pld too long when.....

-You hate it when people say "This mob has to be tanked by a NIN" and will get utterly owned in the attempts to prove them wrong. "

Quote:
Burtgang -10%
Aegis -70% 40-60% of the time and -25% Magic all the time.
Defending Ring -10%
Jelly Ring -5%
Valhalla x2 -10%
etc. etc.

But a smarter paladin would of gone with excalibur/aegis over burt/aegis. Its so easy for rdm/pld/nin to migrate damage/hold hate that all it comes down to is which tank is going to provide more damage for the group.

Which is better at tanking nin/pld/rdm? Doesnt matter all get the job done.

However, anywhere where you can atonement(90% of the mobs ig), and/or the pld has an excalibur, makes PLD the better choice. When all is said and done, more damage out put = faster kill, which is always a good thing.

This is all job mechanics, nothing to do with player/gear(this is assumed that all jobs would have best of both) obviously once you factor in non best gear/skill/experience, you have decisions to make on a case by case. This is why you usually have a shell with a couple of tanks, and usually 2-4 main tanks over the rest of the group, just because of gear/skill/experience of those 2-4, is overall better than the rest who have the jobs leveled(rdm/pld/nin)

*rereads dates* bah didnt notice someone necro'd this.........

Like Barrd says.

There is not an end-all tank.

Some mobs require you to have to shadow tank it, which means NIN/WAR > PLD/NIN.

Some mobs require you to have to blood tank it, which means PLD/WAR (or maybe PLD/NIN) > NIN/WAR.

Its all depends on the mob, and the help the tank gets.

Sure, you're wrong. First of all, NIN/WAR is wrong. DRK sub, hi. Second of all, there is no NM in this game that a NIN/DRK is a BETTER tank on than a PLD. A ninja requires a certain level of support, where as a paladin does not.

I really hope you don't lead an endgame shell with that thinking and if you do I pray for them.

I don't follow, PLD has a lot of hate tools too. I can't name off my head any mobs that NIN can tank where PLD can't. NIN/ and PLD/NIN blink just as well as each other, NIN just has faster DoT better for mobs that'll die fast (merits etc).

They both tank well, but there's no situation I could think of where NIN would destroy a PLD tanking something.

From my extensive experience as a PLD/NIN, I've come across only two mobs that the job combination could not effectively tank.

Faust - almost always requires /WAR. I've done it /NIN before, but it's pretty tough holding hate.

Cactrot Rapido - near impossible to tank as PLD, the two times I've tried I couldn't keep shadows up and recast timers were always down. Then I watched a NIN do it and he never got hit.

Literally everything else in the game you'd try to tank as a 75 PLD can be done with /NIN and the proper support.

Ah Rapido didn't think of that one, would have to try that. Faust I find pretty simple as PLD/NIN even though its usually pointless. I saw a NIN/WAR do it before too.

I agree with all of this except the fact that NIN in fact has more shadows so technically blinks better.

Well one more shadow, PLD also has shield mastery for those times double attacks drop your shadows. NIN doesn't and risks interupt, which is why I said theyd be about equal.

Indeed, Ninjutsu skill is supposed to help interruption minus but I don't see it >_>
