The Beast Within -- A Guide to Blue Mage
Valefor.Prothescar said: » Would never, ever take Haverton for BLU. It's next to completely worthless. Would take movement speed over it if, for some reason, capping Fast Cast, Quick Magic, and Magic Accuracy on everything ever became so easy on BLU that Weatherspoon became worthless... which isn't going to happen any time soon. Only time Haverton is applicable is if you use it for some other job that it's actually good for and for some reason can't maintain Mighty Guard and/or Erratic Flutter. Probably missed the part where I said it would mainly be for my cor as that's my other main job and the one I mostly take to events. My question about Haverton on blu was is it a waste of a ring slot just for DW which by the looks of it... it is. I might try out Weatherspoon I have been on blu a lot recently. So, I've been spending a lot of time trying to get Mighty Guard, and I'm having a hell of a time at it. How is everyone dealing with the Doom from Supernova? I'm subbing WHM and have as many -na'ing trusts as I can, and I'm still losing to it. If it weren't for that one move, I'd have no issues with this, but I've already burned through 150k cruor on this, and I'm starting to get frustrated. Thoughts?
Thanks! That helps. After a few fights, changed atma setup away from things that would increase CDC (although, yes, I see the point of that, as it DOES stop the doom effect if you win...). However, fight after I posted, I got my spell.

can always use holy water and make a macro to spamm them take like 2-3 to remove doom
I don't regret choosing Haverton as I have been (and still am) solo most of the time or doing lower end things like UNM, skirmish etc. and we didn't have trait gifts (and now mighty guard) back then anyway. We used to sacrifice utility spells for dual wield and that is the last thing you want when you are solo or needed to be as self sufficient as possible.
At this point, I would turn it in for Weatherspoon although it isn't that much different for me in terms of overall usefulness, but 300k bayld is a bit too much <.< I don't use gearswap so quick magic isn't really feasible and I would only get 2~3 more macc from Weatherspoon over the ones I have. Light magic bonus is strong but how frequently do I use a light nuke? Hardly ever. Fast cast, I can cap without it with gear I already have (and even easier for blue magic and utsusemi casting times.) Sure, it is a pretty versatile ring and an obvious inventory saver, but I still find use in Haverton, though admittedly much less now. Yeah, without Gear Swap, quick magic is often more of a pain in the *** than it is a help.

Anyone able to learn Cesspool from AoD mission Yggdrasil Beckons 5-2 fighting Dhokmak? I helped someone 3 times to pass all of his mules and no luck. I wasn't able to equip my learning gear at the end tho.

You never actually end up killing either of these bosses, so I doubt it ever performs a check to see if you can learn the spell. Maybe if someone did a darkness SC and MB'd Death around 25%, you might be able to kill before the battle is over though? I don't think you can learn the new spells from missions, you seem to get zoned out before the bosses die.

Like you said, Haverton has gotten worse over time to the point where it is just pointless currently. Same goes for many jobs like Thf. Weatherspoon isn't overwhelmingly useful for a non-gearswap Blu but it's certainly better. Where the ring really shines is Quick Magicing a T6-T5-T4 on Blm/Sch/Geo. Honestly the non-Weatherspoon options are just so far from being as good as weatherspoon it's hard to justify any of them unless you really like crafting or still play Bst. Well I'm thinking of getting Vocane ring just for PDT/MDT builds on most of my jobs, but that's just my opinion xd

Fast cast, I can cap without it with gear I already have (and even easier for blue magic and utsusemi casting times.) If it weren't for Pixie/Archon, you'd potentially be saying the same thing about dark nukes. Much like those two items, Weatherspoon is potent enough to change our nuke hierarchy. As time has gone on, basically all Adoulin rings have become less and less attractive; all except for Weatherspoon. It remains, pound for pound, one of the best pieces for its respective roles. If you're looking for the overall best ring for BLU, it's gotta be weatherspoon. Other options can work for specific jobs, but if BLU is your focus, there's really not much of a contest.
Unless you're going crazy on crafting and want Orvail. I'll swap back when I have full Adhemar +1, dammit. Vocane is a total waste of a reward choice. Had they kept it as 3% PDT- II (item description typo on release day, which probably means they had been considering it), woulda been pretty cool. As just a plain DT- ring when you can cap PDT/MDT anyway with rather similar options... not worth it at all. As I explained back on page 205, I have Haverton... NOT chosen for BLU, but it's still amazing for my COR and RNG (best in slot R.Acc and Snapshot piece). If you want it for your COR, it's still a REALLY good choice for that job and you can get minor use out of it on BLU. That being said, needing additional DW gear on a BLU TP set is a lot less common for me now that I have JP100 gift and need to set less spells for higher DW trait, and Mighty Guard... but I've used it. The DW is obviously more handy for jobs without their own haste spells and high level DW traits (solo THF farming with no trusts, COR/DNC melee with only DW2 trait, etc.) How's the drop rate on a 6/6/6 Dark Ring these days in Abyssea? Last time I hunted for one was back in 2010 and the rate was horrid. Took me over 100 rings just to get 5/5/0 and the second ring took me well over 200 chests.
I'm asking because I have found Vocane ring very useful for all my jobs in terms of set flexibility and I hardly ever cast magic on BLU in tight enough situations to notice the 8% Quick magic I already have. hasnt changed, still sucks to get perfect rings. worth it tho

I chose renaye ring because I play blu and geo mainly now, so seemed like a nice option for both.

It's actually a pretty poor option for both >_>;;
If you are playing Geo mainly and not using weatherspoon you are doing something very wrong.
Valefor.Prothescar said: » hasnt changed, still sucks to get perfect rings. worth it tho Okay, one more for the "do this if I'm bored and regular trio is busy/asleep" list. I have a couple mil in bayld even after 3 ring changes, SR and GEO gear so maybe I'll play around with Weatherspoon as you guys recommended. If nothing else, I'm interested in seeing how much more damage it allows my PLD to do with DE + Holy II. |
