Depends i supose, some people play it to get away from life and some play it for fun.
Play another game too :d Well Diablo 3 will be there before FF XI shutdown, so it's not a big deal.

I have a couple of game friends who did this for another MMO. It started out as a bunch of us writing stories of how our characters came to be and whatnot. Over time, they turned their tale into an online novel, and the game developers contacted a publisher to get it into print.
So it's definitely not something to pass over if you have the creative mind for storytelling. Never know where it might lead.
I didn't read the other pages was too lazy.
I'd probably:
1. keep in contact with my good friends from ffxi.
2. play and buy more other games
3. pay more attention to college (maybe, boooooring)
4. cry
5. probably not get another MMO I put too much time in this one to start another.
6. I'd be very bored and feel empty inside come 9PM if I wasn't going out somewhere.
7. cry some more

I take frequent and extended breaks from FFXI. I've quit altogether twice. But it's the community that keeps me coming back.. I actually enjoy it when I take a break, no more coming to events on time, no more grinding to get exp, or grinding through farming.
Seriously, the only reason I play anymore is cause of the community... so long as FFXIAH stayed here and all the players too, I wouldn't care if FFXI shutdown. I got personal contact information outside of FFXI for all the people I care about.

olry sounds like fun... writing books takes forever I start them... and yeah finishing is difficult need deadlines
