It would not surprise me that the people that voted for this bill havent read the 2,000 pages of it.

Ok, I agree with you. I don't want a purely military government either. Lets say the only thing our government had to focus on is a military (which if I'm hearing you all correctly would be just peachy with you), what would the political landscape look like?

Sorry but my views on healthcare are not mutually exclusive to freedom.

Quit trying to put words in my mouth.

The point is, I don't not believe the government should have any bearing on any of our lives outside of the minuscule amount that we allow through the constitution.

Any time they take it upon themselves to expand their role it is an act of treason in my eyes.

The political landscape would be much more focused on the states and the states ability to govern themselves. Which is as it should be.

Because then you really do have the option of going somewhere else if you really dislike it.

Pretty much this. I approve of alot more than the military. But no where near as much is out there. I have already stated how alot of organizations benefite everyone in general anyways and how some can't really pick and chose anyways. Or how some directly help everyone in some way shape or fashion

Lmao, yeah the 10% tax on tanning is to offset the cost of skin cancer and its impact on the system. Wheelchairs, don't understand that one unless its in case someone runs over your foot(JK) A good tax would be on soda and candy for diabetes research, dont get me wrong I love soda and candy. In fact if they quit makeing mountain dew I'd likely die. Id also probably pay enough in soda tax to buy a cheap chinese automobile.

Its all in the name of the country dude, United STATES of America. Our country is a bunch of states that are united under one flag. The FED was established for 2 reasons. To keep the states from fighting among each other/settle disputes and to produce a defense strong enough to repell any attackers...I don't mind paying for these basic needs, they are important.

Hi Harp

I like your tone of unity. You stand to fight for what is right, but only so long as what is "right" is defined in militaristic terms and calls for military action. According to what you have said, then and only then is government doing what it's there for. Government is meant to protect the people. It stands as the quintessential shield for the American citizen, and what ever costs may come from being this "shield," whatever needs they require you "...don't mind paying for..." because "...they are important."

You said that government is supposed to defend against and repel attackers. The problem is that that is such a vague definition. What is a defense? What is an attacker? What constitutes an attack?

Does an "attacker" have to be an individual person? Can it be a group of people? Can it be something inhuman? Would the defense of this vague "attacker" necessarily be a soldier? A weapon? An army?

Then again, maybe it's better that that definition remain as vague as you stated it. Maybe once we start looking at what can threaten the lives of the United States citizens we encounter such a huge list that we thank your blanket statement of governmental responsibilities. Maybe that's the best way to look at it. But if it is -- if the list of "attackers" and "defenses" are so exorbitant that we take the road less traveled and stick with the vague definition you so adamantly uphold -- then why does the only appropriate response to that list involve military responsibilities? Why wouldn't there also be a plethora of defensive actions for government to take?

You fail to understand the scope of the problem.

AND that is why there is a growing movement in the U.S. to replace every single person in Washington as everyone single one is corrupt and a scam artist.

If I gave you a choice between death by fire or drowning and you choose drowning does that mean you now support drowning because after all you voted for it.

If drowning is the lesser two evils, then yes. You do support it, when opposed against death by fire, no?

When would the taxes end. Tv's bad for you, burger king is bad for you, driving more means better chance of getting hurt, lets tax that more, beer can cause problem...whoa whoops think that gets some nifty taxes, going to college is bad for you since ur gunna not sleep well, drink, smoke w/e, buying a cheap mattress will be bad for your back, better tax those. Heck you like playing sports, well shoot your gunna get hurt right, maybe your tax rate should go up. BAD BAD BAD taxes you leave the door wide open. This is why I brought up the tanning salon. This is why I hate smoking bans and taxes, yeah I despise cigarette smoke, but I know when that tax money dries up they are going to move onto other things like pepsi. In fact Philadelphia is looking at a tax per ounce. Hello $3 2 liter bottles.

And for people saying we are silly for debating this. We look at it this way, even if in your entire life you convince one person of your view point, you've essentially doubled your vote!

No.

being forced to choose between 2 things you don't want is not the same as supporting something.

Ok, so you are saying our government would be much more decentralized. Do you think that would mesh well with a centralized military force? Would you even have a centralized military force, or would you depend on state militia?

lol fool this country was founded on ppl that wanted to to be free and get away from taxing.
That all ended at boston tea party,
when the traders that left there country for proclaimed what they needed for there so called free country.
"George Washington is nothing but a trader"
fine tactician as he may have been still a trader

Skiutah, good post.

It is hard to predict and detect threats, categorize defenses and attackers. So hard to construct a good response to this. I'm really trying to bend and twist and figure out how you could categorize health insurance for all as a matter of keeping our nation secure and thats what the meat of this debate is about.

"Why wouldn't there also be a plethora of defensive actions for government to take?"

Can you give me some examples. Hard to kind of grab what you may be thinking of.

Again being sincere, good post.
