It can be a HNM without being a botting mess (depending on your definition of HNM... using the definition here of one intended to be of such a difficulty that an alliance is required to kill it).

Nope, probably not. If it's got good drops and is worth camping, players will find a way to bot it to make camping and competition easier.
Example: Ixion and Sandworm. "unbottable" by conventional terms, and yet linkshells still use 3rd party applications to alert them to a spawn in zones, and some applications can even tell you a pinpoint location.
If it's instanced, no problems at all!
