New games suck... or is it just me?
By Afania 2024-11-03 12:32:06
Review count is utterly meaningless. It correlates to game sales, but it also correlates to ad spending (because shocker, a LOT of reviews are just ads), which itself correlates to game sales.
Did you read the link that I posted?
Review count isn't utterly meaningless. According to the data using improved review count model still has Average accuracy of 67.34% and half of the games are within 30% margin error.
So you can still do a pretty rough estimate on sales using review count.
As far as paid review goes. It only really works on small games with small review count. First of all only valid purchase will count as legit reviews by Steam. Free keys given away won't enter actual review count number.
Secondly Valve DOES ban developer account if they caught you spam fake paid reviews. I've seen game dev got banned because of these.
So realistically, for a large game with tens of thousands of reviews, it's very very hard to change the review result with paid reviews. You'll need a lot of paid reviews to influence review result at meaningful level, and you'll definitely get caught by Valve with that many paid reviews.
This is also why in the game marketing industry, when people discuss marketing data related stuff, game with 1k review is often used as a "baseline" to add titles to the dataset. Because once a game reaches that many reviews it gets harder to cheat with paid reviews.
Ultimately, while I agree that review count isn't 100% accurate, it isn't utterly useless either. It's still a common method for people to estimate sales if they don't have other data to reference.

What was that about re-reading?
Quote: Capcom's pre-release sales projection for the game's launch window, through the end of March 2017, was 4 million units.
I'll give you a pass because you're ESL, but "pre-release sales projection" is the sales goals, not actual sales.
But even then, ESL is no excuse if you look at both sales paragraphs on the wiki, the latter I didnt need since it was unnecessary for the ongoing topic:
Quote: Sales
Capcom's pre-release sales projection for the game's launch window, through the end of March 2017, was 4 million units.[92] The game had shipped over 2.5 million units worldwide days after the release, while the demo exceeded 7.15 million downloads.[93] The modest shipment figure had an effect on Capcom's stock price, which fell more than three percent following the Tokyo Stock Exchange.[94] It was the best-selling video game in the UK during its week of release according to Chart-Track, amounting to the third-best debut in Resident Evil history behind Resident Evil 5 (7.1 million) and Resident Evil 6 (6.6 million). 200,000 units had also been sold through Steam during that time.[94][95][96] It ranked first in the Japanese charts for the week ending January 29; the PS4 sales totalled 187,306 units,[97] 58.9 percent of its initial shipment.[98] In the month of January in the United States, Resident Evil 7 sold the most out of any video game.[99]
On February 1, Capcom communicated to its investors that the game had recouped its budget,[100] while it remained at the top of the UK sales chart in its second week[101] and ranked as the second-best-selling video game in the United States, behind For Honor.[102] By April 2017, Resident Evil 7 had sold 3.5 million units worldwide, short of Capcom's expectation of 4 million.[103] In May 2017, Capcom gave the game a lifetime sales forecast of ten million units, citing favorable reviews, marketing and downloadable content as contributing factors.[104] The game entered the top 10 of "Capcom Platinum Titles" that passed 1 million sold units, and by September 2018, total sales reached 5.7 million,[105] which rose to 6 million by that December,[106] 7.5 million by March 2020,[107] 7.9 million by June 2020,[108] 8.5 million by December 2020,[109] and 9 million units by March 2021.[110] By June 2022, the game had sold 11 million units.[111] By March 2023, it had sold 12 million units.[112] By December 2023, it had sold 13 million units.[1]
How could it be 4 million at the end of March 2017, and then be 3.5 million units by April 2017??
hmmm

Anyways, heres more from Veilguard

As you can see, the heroes hide inside what I believe to be a dead Dragon's ribcage from assailants. The assailants are smaller than the heroes, but are somehow unable to slip through this gap that the heroes slipped though. Here you can see a gap that is almost wide enough for two to slip through shoulder-to-shoulder. They didnt conjure a ward or anything of that sort.
This is worse than the ***you see on TV where the protagonist magically gets lucky at every turn and every situation falls in their favor.

Lol, is that just a picture you found on Twitter? How do you know what's even going on? Are you playing the game? What kind of mobs are they? Undead? Do they detect by sight or sound? Better yet, are the heroes about to leap out and kill them?

It's a still from a scene where the characters are running away from these "Darkspawn" and the characters turn sideways to go through the ribs, while the "Darkspawn" claw at them without really trying to get in.
The characters are in armor/clothing, while the "Darkspawn" are nude.
There is one of what I assume is supposed to be an Ogre, but it's behind all the small ones, and the small ones really should have no problem getting to the heroes.
I remember when Darkspawn were intelligent and also wore armor more often than not. These looks like discount husks from Mass Effect without the cool sci-fi element to them.

I dont know
Maybe I clicked the link and watched the video capture of gameplay and cutscene to find out whats going on?
Astounding I know.
Now tell us again how its shattering steam records!
For someone who keeps repeating the nonsensical garbage about “das a conspiracy”, you so an absolute bang-up job of being completely uninformed.

So? What happened after the preplanned cutscene ended? Wasn't included in the Twitter narrative? You know what this reminds me of? RE4 where the zombies swarm the house with Leon and Luis inside. They didn't quite make it inside during the cutscene, but right after it ended and the player had control again, they were back to being zombies.

Even then it still said 2.5m days after release, not 2.5m until March 2017. So you read it wrong too!
No excuse for non-ESL people!

Seems like Bioware made a perfect game for white rage
It seems that most of the anti-woke rage negative review on steam aren't even in English.
I find many English negative reviews on Steam fairly fair, at least. Many of them focused more on not liking DA direction change more than "woke bad".
Japanese reviews kinda has more positive review than negative, since Japan is relatively more open minded in Asia. And Thai(the most LGBTQ friendly country in Asia) has the highest positive review ratio.
Simplified Chinese seem to have mostly negative reviews, and a lot of them are basically just attacking LGBTQ, that's it.
Russian reviews also have way more negative than positive, and they also talked about gender stuff a lot.
I honestly feel the positive/negative ratio greatly depends on that region's culture as a whole. And many of the negative reviewers seems to come from culturally conservative countries.

Steam reviews are not a safe space for white rage, they don't even try. You have to actually have the game in your library, and Steam shares your playtime next to your review. Two things that eliminate that crowd from contention. They stick with Metacritic, Twitter, Youtube, this thread, places where context doesn't matter.

The same way you guys are throwing the "woke" term around? Or is this thread for conservative buzzwords only?

They must be really mad because more than 75% of inventors are mostly white and more than 10% are Asian according to the demographics and statistics.

The same way you guys are throwing the "woke" term around? the word you stated has been used 230 times so far in this thread, in the 1009 post that means we have averaged ~23 wokes per 100 posts. which implies this thread is 23% woke.
I honestly am not sure what to search that is like exclusively used by left, but chud(s) was used 22 times, someone give me a word to check!

honestly I thought it would be funnier, apparently none of the word clouds sites actually take in words and counts kinda dumb... fixed it by using a python library.

https://www.ign.com/articles/remedy-has-recouped-most-of-the-development-and-marketing-expenses-for-alan-wake-2
Quote: Alan Wake 2 continues to be a success for Remedy, with the company reporting today it has recouped "most" of the development and marketing cost of Alan Wake 2 as of the end of September.
This article was written by the same person who was upset their attempt to slander and ruin Wukongs sales failed.
But I digress, don't the two bolded lines completely contradict each other? How can something be considered a success if a year after release you're still in the red?

So... I have been increasingly frustrated with new games over years. I feel like so much effort it placed on graphics, lighting, art style, ect and maybe 10% of that effort is placed into gameplay, controls, and story.
My latest purchase was Visions of Mana, which I was pretty excited for. Secret of Mana is in my top 5 all time, I've played Seiken Densetsu 3 translated and while I didn't think it was as good as Secret of Mana, it was still extremely enjoyable. I skipped Trials of Mana since I had already played Seiken Densetsu 3. Vision is just bad. The english voice acting was awful, the characters were bland/generic or just stupid, and I was 3hrs into the game and all I was doing to running 30seconds between CS. Felt like a slightly interactive shitty anime.
Hogwarts Legacy, Visions of Mana, Baldur's Gate 3, Starfield... I felt like all of these super hyped games were absolute duds. Final Fantasy 16 is coming to PC in a few weeks and I'm not sure if I even want to try it anymore. I've heard people say not great things about it.
I know I'm just venting a bit here, but it really sucks being excited for a new game and then the crushing disappointment when it's not fun.
