Retail and Horizon are not two different games. They are using stolen assets from the real game (including post 99 items), using similar content. missions/storylines and systems the real game had etc. Its fair to compare them like we've been doing as they are from the same game. If you really want to kill horizon and other private servers then you should join the campaigns for an official "classic" server supported by SE. The masses would jump to the official product if it exsisted... but it does not.

How does one join the "campaign" for a classic server? Hate to tell you, but people have been asking for this for a decade. SE knows that people want a classic FFXI server but similar to WoW, it's probably an incredible amount of effort to create a commercial-quality version of classic FFXI, because they likely haven't maintained all the code for that version of the game. They've evaluated this already and determined that there's not enough demand for it to be worth spending all that development effort and splitting their existing player base in two.
It's not even remotely economically viable, unless you're using volunteer labor, have low standards for code quality, and aren't charging a subscription for it.

But would they though? Surely the main attraction to a private server is because it is free and secondly because its FFXI. Though the population of Horizon is too small for SE to even stop and think that it would be worth their time and money to make.
But Horizon always has 4000 players!! Every other private server could barely crack 300, but that just shows how high demand is now.

The biggest problem with "classic" ffxi is what is "classic"? is it pre-Zilart, pre-CoP, pre-ToAU, pre-WoG or pre-Abyssea? do the mini expansions count as classic?
Personally I started playing just before CoP released so that for me is classic FFXI, I also know I do not have the time I did as a middle school kid to devote to the game.

The 75 era should remain in our memories, no classic server is needed. Those resources are better spent on an expansion and actually caring about the game. I dont get why would people want to go back officially when we have so much freedom with jobs now, so many cool spells and equipment etc. We just need better content to use it with.

EDIT: The major reason why I and others like myself enjoy going back to start over is because a fresh economy reset is a really fun experience. Same reason I enjoy games like Path of Exile. Would absolutely love official progression servers that start at 0 and release expansion after expansion over time until it lines up with current retail. Hell, this idea would likely even bring in new blood to retail in the long run.

Money is rarely why a lot of us installed a private server. It's the desire to experience 75 era again. As much as I hate camping, it is a unique experience with a level of excitement you just don't get out of running sortie or omen. There's something that is so exhilarating about low-man claiming a king or Khim/Cerb and having to hold with just a couple of people while you call people and ping discord to get everyone out there for the fight. Or having the boys show up for a day 8 Faf/Nid at 3am and you get claim and double a. body drops or something. The intermittent schedule of reinforcement keeps us coming back for more even 20 years later.
People should play whatever they find to be more fun, and some just don't enjoy retail at all.
