My experience playing FFXI between 2018 - now...

retail: 70% botting, 20% playing, 10% forum posting

horizon: 0% botting, 99% playing, 1% forum posting

I think I know where I am going.

Just going to repeat that arguing over the content is pointless. Retail has better content. This isn't up for debate. There are more events, a wider variety of loot, and things for every difficulty level. The content has required planning and lets you use your jobs to the fullest to overcome difficult foes. 75 cap is all trivial.

People don't prefer private servers because 75 XI was an amazingly well designed endgame that held up for 20 years. They prefer it because they get to play with actual players, instead of bots and RMT. There's no point trying to convince the private server players their content is garbage, just like there's no point trying to convince the retail players they might have more fun if the rules were enforced. For the most part, each side likes it that way and that's why they play what they do.

And people in Hollywood question why the only movies getting made are sequels any more.

nothing related to ffxi has ever taken a single iota of skill be it retail or horizon. the game is not set up in a way that has skill expression.

I assume you got all your R25 Odyssey clears without expressing a single iota of skill then? Is that why 99.95% of the population can't clear this content, because it's so easy?

Convoluted content that locks out anyone in the playerbase that doesn't treat the game like a second job where wins are more based on RNG and the server ping being low enough that your gearswaps function properly than actual skill is a good thing somehow.

There are tons of testimonials out there of people killing V25 T3 NMs with WC3 and attack down auras. It's nowhere near as random as people think, and most people bitching about randomness (with a couple minor exceptions like V25 Bumba) are either not good enough (see earlier point about skill) or are exaggerating. People have beaten V25 Ongo with Matk aura and no WC5 or 6.

Even GRANTED that you need a WC6 in order to win, that still doesn't mean you don't need skill to win, that's a false dichotomy. In a world where you couldn't possibly beat Arebati with an attack down aura, it would still require skill to beat him.

I'll give them this, 75 era content was more "group friendly", as in you could take more then six and you didn't need to be hyper-optimized to progress. For past few years retail FFXI has become more and more focused on hyper-optimized six man groups, which is extremely exclusionary. Sortie and Odyssea would of been so much better if they were restricted to 18 players instead of six. Currently I'm running with a group of seven people who meet a few times a week to do stuff, frequently someone has an appointment or is otherwise not able to attend so it works out for us. There were times when I wished to bring others but the six member + once per day limited didn't let us.
