So, I guess the NA exhibition in Boston that was cancelled isn't ever happening, but a Japan-only exhibition, sure, why not? Watch them give out yet another exclusive merchandise item or in-game Rainbow/Gold mog pell.
Yet, meanwhile Square-Enix is panicking that folks haven't been pre-ordering FF16 and that "they worry that materials have not been sufficiently marketed" leading up to the game's release. ( GameRant FF16 article here)
SE doesn't care about it's non-JP market. Yet, I wonder how SE's NFT investment strategy is going.
Yes, I do want the folks who are able to make it to this exhibit to have a blast and share the experience, but I can't help but feel that SE frequently diminishes the significance of it's non-JP population.

I was actually excited for that thing in Boston, but of course it gets cancelled.
FF16 looks like garbage honestly. HP sponge mobs, the same combos over and over, the graphics are off imo and the UI is ugly. Oh well

If SE didn't care about their non-JP market, they wouldn't be making FFXVI an action game to try appeal more to the west. Or putting huge amounts of money into stuff like Forspoken, or their many western-developed games over the past decade (they only recently sold off all those western studios and IPs).
I'm not saying SE's management doesn't have issues. But being too Japan-focused isn't really their problem.

I think it's good from a standpoint of the developers to feel the love for the game from their home audience, they lost some people and I think something like this re-invigorates them and keeps them invested in carrying on.
The biggest issues with games like this isn't so much the profit margins but having people who love it enough to want to work on it, and this helps with that.
It's a tough job working on 11, cause Square really don't treat it well. It's understaffed and underfunded, but they keep going regardless cause they know what will happen if they don't.
Merch is out of budget funding too.

SE works internationally because people want to play JRPG and anime eye candy games. When they try to walk away from that for bigger market share, they crash and burn. There is nothing wrong with being really good at your niche and being internationally accessible.
Other than for middle managers or CEOs trying to justify their pay by saying stupid things like 'increasing revenues from diversifying'. That just means wasting money doing things that you aren't good at.

It's so annoying to me that ff16 is sucking up all the spare dev time in the division, there is no scenario where this was a good idea at all.

Tbh I could say the same about people thinking non-JP is only NA and going to Boston from Europe would be any less troublesome than going to Japan.

(Implication that FFXI has HP-sponge mobs, but FFXVI doesn't) FFXI doesn't have HP-sponge mobs. An HP-sponge is an enemy that blocks your path and takes forever to kill, yet stands no real threat of actually stopping the player.
The only enemies in FFXI that don't pose at least a little threat to the player are usually done away with in just a few hits.
Satisfying game design would see either lots of low-threat enemies that fall en masse with cleaving attacks, or fewer, high-threat enemies that stack up against the character.

The Goods page was updated a few days ago and includes some stuff that wasn't mentioned on Freshly Picked.
https://finalfantasyxi-exhibition.com/goods/
There are some pretty neat odds and ends! You can tell what most of it is just by looking at it, but since the page is in Japanese only here are some highlights.
Cap in the style of Duelist's Chapeau (kinda, lol): https://finalfantasyxi-exhibition.com/goods/#goods02-10
Shorts in the style of Byakko's Haidate: https://finalfantasyxi-exhibition.com/goods/#goods02-12
Airship Pass passcase: https://finalfantasyxi-exhibition.com/goods/#goods02-21
Rainbow chest with cookies and Rare/Ex badges: https://finalfantasyxi-exhibition.com/goods/#goods02-14
Aegis cushion: https://finalfantasyxi-exhibition.com/goods/#goods02-17
Ranperre goldpiece: https://finalfantasyxi-exhibition.com/goods/#goods02-22

Square Enix doesn't give a damn about their international customers. :/
Those are some neat items. I like the Aegis/Ochain and Ridill.

Darn thing is ~$92 before any other considerations though. But I'd still buy it for that if i could ;;

Overall I agree when comparing the two games.
But you reminded me of the pain in getting assault points @ lvl 75 with low rank, or with others who did not have rank, and the brittle rock that is infact not very brittle:

A lot of people would buy these if we were able but I'm guessing they can't due to some kind of licensing issue or something, it's surprising just how many and good the items are.

What we need is someone in Japan who can proxy for us.
But that ain't gonna happen.
