/war warcry is meh, not at all like main job war. (~7% at ML 50)
berserk is good, but empy +3 body somewhat addresses it. I find that there aren't many places I need it to hit pdl ranges.

berserk is good, but empy +3 body somewhat addresses it. I find that there aren't many places I need it to hit pdl ranges. I suppose if you assume you're always attack capped and using the maximum amount of PDL you could possibly use then yeah, berserk isn't very useful, but if there's ever any reason you could use any attack, berserk is incredible (and warcry is a minor bonus).
Also: WSD counting for all hits of a WS isn't very impactful since very few ranged WS have multiple hits and I'm not sure any of them get significant damage from their second hits. Cerberus.Shadowmeld

You specifically referenced last stand, which is a 2-hit ranged WS. 10% WSD from /drg on that is at minimum 0.4 ftp added, not accounting for what TP bonus you already have.
Fencer from ML50 is 300TP bonus, which is always 0.6 http://ftp. At 2000 effective TP, the WSD bonus from /drg is equal to /war fencer bonus. Edit: Last Stand is a 2-hit, FTP replicating ranged ws. It has strictly linear ftp growth 2.0 => 3.0 => 4.0 Only Jishnu's Radiance and you're using that for the AM and not the WSD compared to LS.
Shooting RNG is a princess job, it doesn't accidentally go anywhere. It's planned for. Thanks for all the responses! About what I figured, but couldn't hurt to ask.
I also see there's been a lot of posts about the Prime Bow Pinaka here, but very few posts about the Prime Gun Earp. Any thoughts on it now that it's been out a while? Online
Gun seems more of a Cor toy than a Rng staple, given the bullet is useful for Cor's Savage as well.
WS wise Terminus seems a bit weaker than Sarv, though I've only seen Cor use the gun. Offline

Any suggestions for my up-close-and-personal Sarv set? Thoughts on maybe a regal ring over the Epaminondas's ring? Offline

What about for Savage Blade with Kclub?
Thanks :)

OK, another Savage question... best offhand for when you have DW and aren't using Kclub? My reason is not having a Kclub, but I suppose also could be relevant for someone who does in situations where offhand acc is unacceptably low.
I see Gleti noted on the BGwiki guide, but IDK that I'm convinced (and that guide not mentioning Kclub already seems a little suspect in the first place). I was thinking Ternion +1, but maybe Blurred+1? Or, potentially even M.Kris still worthwhile for non-Kclub players? Bahamut.Celebrindal

Ternion would win for damage, Blurred for frequency...which often times these days is the real winner since SC'ing is less frequent (certainly if Savage from a RNG is involved!!) and stat vomit in the other slots lessens that gap in damage created with Ternion.

Any advice on properly using hover shot? Always feel like I'm either wasting too much time moving and stopping or trying to shoot again too quick after moving and getting an aim interrupt.

Which weapons see the most use these days if Primes are not counted? Anni for Odyssey and Gastra for Sortie come to mind, anything else? I imagine you want Fail-not for ammo once you do get to considering Primes?

Wouldn't Crep Knife win in high buff over Ternion? Crep wins a lot on paper.. in actuality it has felt super bad on any job I've tried to use it on. The comparison with ternion is the 4% TA vs. 5% QA which favors Crep. The 5% WSD vs 3% CHA favors ternion imo for savage (5% x STR/MND, vs ~9 CHA bonus). And the delay on ternion is very nice. There won't be a lot of difference honestly. Kaffy said: » Which weapons see the most use these days if Primes are not counted? Anni for Odyssey and Gastra for Sortie come to mind, anything else? I imagine you want Fail-not for ammo once you do get to considering Primes? In no particular order Gastraphetes Armageddon Annihilator (hate free damage basically) Fomalhaut (bullets at the very least) Gandiva (best DPS before primes, limited use) Fail-Not (just for arrows) Offline

Is RNG preferred for any Sortie or Ody fights?
Getting back into the game and looking over RNG gear (my favorite job) but when I left it was significantly worse than melees in most content. Offline

Basically a requirement for arebatti, thats about it off top of my head
Edit: this is for v25 mind you, v15/v20 can be flexible afaik I know it's just besieged, but the knife has 50% crit damage and RNG can use it...so just sit on the ramparts and jishnu's their face off?
Yes, arebati is anni fight primarily, though some people use Gandiva/Armageddon for a portion of the fight. This is a bit risky, so anni is the safest choice.
You can also use RNG on some fights like Procne etc but it's not necessary. If you want to hamfist it in, you can probably put it in the majority of the T1/T2 fights. Bahamut.Celebrindal

One of my favorite things to do in game w/ Pinaka...just pretend I'm at Helm's Deep.....and keep count against them smelly Tarus. ^^ I also got convinced to come RNG to v25 Xevioso- and it actually worked lol :P Did NOT utilize True Shot with that hate-resetting sumbitch, and it was hairy as hell...but was super fun and the damage was fantastic! Would not recommend to most :) I for one believe that we as Rangers often have to prove we work in settings more than "we're the only thing that works" like was back in the day. At least the folk I hang with just wanna be successful while having fun these days, and the success aspect either is old news on repeated content; or falls second to making sure we're enjoying ourselves. If you can show you on RNG can hang, don't let 'em stop ya from coming to the mix. It's a piercing/slashing job. Malignance and a cool tp bonus body and bow. No accuracy issues. There are much worse places to start as a DD.

eliroo said: » Is RNG preferred for any Sortie or Ody fights? We used RNG on Marmokrebs iirc in a triple RP kill attempt doing SCH SC > Marksmanship > CDC (PLD) non-stop, was pretty fun setup. Arebati is the main fight you'd include it. You can also use RNG in segments party; it has an incredible Savage Blade build and won't suffer from Acc issues if using a Kraken Club Offhand. As for Sortie, it used to see heavy use in most 8-boss mage-hybrid strats. Normal Magic setup is SCH BLM GEO COR RUN 6TH, last slot can either be another SCH or a RNG, sometimes even another BLM. Though, I think those groups have started to die off in favor of pure mage setups or Melee groups. But RNG is a really good DD if it can maintain Hover Shot stacks, and there's really no reason you couldn't use it in place of any other DD if you wanted to. You'd avoid most nasty TP moves, you'd always have Double Shot/Barrage for every boss, you can switch to Savage Blade if you're up close on the minis/top floor and not worry about losing your Hover Shot, and you'd never have to worry about walling anybody on bottom floors. You could even go HAM with a weapon like Gandiva if you didn't have prime, which is probably one of the few places you could use it without worry. The main reason RNG has fell off the map so hard is because most people tend ignore unique jobs like RNG in favor of brute force DDs like SAM WAR DRK, due to their SPs and raw strength. EES/Overkill doesn't compete with Mighty Strikes, Sould Enslavement, or Yaegesumi, and honestly, many people just don't see badass RNGs too often, so it gets forgotten. I'd love to see a melee or shooting setup in Sortie utilizing a MAX RNG; I think it would be quite an interesting change of pace job that would fit right in without having to make any adjustments. In fact, now that I think about it, unless the boss content outright resists piercing damage, there isn't a single fight in the game where using a RNG DD wouldn't be safer and probably just as effective from a DPS front since RNG is a self-buffing powerhouse DD with Hover Shot Lakshmi.Buukki said: » In fact, now that I think about it, unless the boss content outright resists piercing damage, there isn't a single fight in the game where using a RNG DD wouldn't be safer and probably just as effective from a DPS front since RNG is a self-buffing powerhouse DD with Hover Shot I don't parse so take this with a grain of salt but it's my understanding that when compared pound-for-pound, melee DD do more damage than a RNG. This is especially true for shorter fights (Sortie) since you can't build up Hover Shot stacks. Despite that, I still agree with the premise that you can slap a RNG in most content without causing any problems, but I don't think it's true that RNG can do the same DPS as a WAR, SAM, DRK, DRG, etc. on the frontlines smacking things, even with 1hrs excluded. Online
As much as I love rng, I have to agree, it doesn't stack up to any of the heavy melee DDs either with shooting or savage.
If you're shooting Rng doesn't hit the numbers they do, even with Pinaka. If you're meleeing it does similar Savage numbers but can't wear any of the top melee armor the other jobs can wear and survival/debuffs becomes an issue. Nor use any other melee weapon. Fun to play around with, unfortunately it seems designed to do a little less than melee dds since you have the option of staying at range. Offline

Most fun I've had with RNG was competing with CORs in Dynamis-D but I think even that strategy has died down now in favor of more melee heavy comps.
Thanks for all the replies! I play flex DD for my group of friends so was just trying to figure out what to prioritize and where. Sounds like my RNG will at least see some use (may tinker around with it in sortie once we get comfortable in there). Seconded. Ranger is tons of fun and I love playing it, but even with Pinaka I can't match the damage I do on my melee jobs. You can't really utilize trueshot against trash mobs because they're squishy and move around too much, and hover shot only builds up on boss mobs. Outside odyssey there aren't many that live long enough to get your stacks all that high. I still remember a while ago when I brought my warrior to ambuscade to clear some monthlys and mid run I swapped to ranger for a couple clears to play with Pinaka. I was shooting and we did get the clear, but after two runs on ranger the leader asked me to change back to warrior because I was doing too little damage for his tastes. And he wasn't wrong, I put up 20-30% more damage per fight when I switched back to warrior. Ranger is a ton of fun, but it's an undeniable fact that pound for pound melee dd's have a higher damage ceiling than a shooting ranger. It's just the caveat that comes with the safety of attacking from distance.
When I was doing Sortie in a Trio starting out, I killed E boss on shooting RNG with a COR and RDM. Trueflight, Hotshot, and Seraph Blade. Easy to get hover shot because just don't be in the gas. No tank, just healer trusts. So long as you get the metal from botchi then antidotes take all the risk out of the fight and you would range most of his moves. But it's not like there was another basement boss we could take down easily after that. It just made a basic run actually fun instead of a terrible daily chore and you could fit on other chest objectives because it was faster.
Doing Melee on RNG while shooting Trueflight on opposite sides of the NM to get some hovershot stacks was pretty nice for lots of ambu before odyssey, but nyame has let everyone catch up, regardless of damage type. If you aren't leaning hard into Trueflight's properties for extra damage, then you really lose a lot of the appeal. Hotshot can be nice for the same thing so you can avoid constant double dark weather but at the end of the day you have to be able to do the numbers. If you're doing less, you're doing less. My wife made the stage 4 gun for her COR and does 70k at full tp on COR while killing domain dragons with the awakening bonus. Like that's really good for a gun on COR, but it's not good for savage blade and savage blade exists. |
