Ghostbusters isn't and never was a chick flick. Even many "geek girls" hated the new Ghostbusters. As you said, it was trying to replace the original and it failed. It didn't help that Feig's response to criticism was to insult the Ghostbuster brand's main audience.
There was a good amount of people out there writing mysogynistic ***just to be ***, Feig's reactions added fuel to the fire.
