I need to go find/dust off my old PS2 and replay my old copy of Final Fantasy Tactics.. /sigh.

The FFT War of Lions version is better than the original one (available even on mobiles).

Personally the PSP version rocks. Even better if you can get another PSP to play the amazing multiplayer modes.

except for the animation slowdowns, mistimed sound effects from spells, etc. as much I loved the new translation and the cinematics, the game deserved better with regards to how it plays. the kicker is that it is just piss poor optimization, as running the PS1 version on a PSP the aforementioned issues just disappear.

You do know the slowdowns in WoTL can be fixed right? The PSP version is the definite version to play with, especially hooking it up to a Sony Bravia TV that has display modes specifically for the PSP.

I loved that FFT was being told from the future as Ramza is finally vindicated for his role in the Lion War. But I'd say Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together is the overall better strategy RPG.

Chrono Cross leaves a bitter taste in my mouth with the whole 'Trigger' team being killed offscreen to further a plot point. Weak.

I actually enjoyed Shadow Hearts 1 & 2 myself (didn't care for 3) for something outside of FF. Other wise I personally liked FF8 the best.

On a side note, I thought there was a little bit of politics in all of them, some more than others though.

by running custom firmware on a vanilla PSP? yeah, I had heard that, however, I would sooner play it on my Vita. Square could have fixed it themselves instead of programming it so poorly for the port to begin with, but we live in an era where we have to settle for "good enough" support from developers.

There is no true proof they were killed, and some evidence that they were alive at the time of Chrono Cross. And in the end, the future was once more reconstructed, none knows for sure what happened after.

Then you're really missing out then since its so easy to do. The game really is a joy to play once the slowdown is removed and with mods for rebalanced skills, jobs, items makes the game much more challenging and much more fun. If you want to play on a Vita, you can add CFW for the PSP software there too but the methods are a bit more onerous.

As for what Square should have done, you're preaching to the choir so no real need to explain. However, the PSP version still stands as the definite version over the PS1 version once you easily rid of yourself of the slowdown.

my PSP's CFW got stuck at some version a few years ago. I just suffer through the touch controls on my iPad when I want to play, for the most part. if they had patched it at any point, I would have bought a Playstation TV unit just for it, and it would have been worth it. I cannot think of a game in the past ~20 years I have devoted as much time to as FFT.

On Suikoden 3:

Honestly, most of the main and "semi-main supporting" characters were well done in that game. Yeah, there are a few turds in the Stars of Destiny punchbowl (mostly in Thomas' group and the archetypal Suikoden "Oh crap! The story's done and we still need 37 more Stars!" grab bag), but the movers and shakers are well fleshed out, believable characters that all contribute something vital to the story. It's far and away my favorite Suikoden game, and a large part of that was how well they handled the characters and their stories.

Personally, the absolute pinnacle of video game storytelling was Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. That game was beyond brilliant, and pants-pissingly funny to boot. Too bad all the sequels/spinoffs were crap.
