I'm playing FFXI on a $200 budget laptop while mobile and I'm trying to get the textures to a lower resolution so I can get a better framerate. Right now it chugs along anywhere from 5-20fps, but every time I try to turn down the texture resolutions in the config windower will overwrite them to the native resolution of the fullscreen borderless window.

tl;dr windower makes the game look too nice, I need it to look worser.

Um... I'd take my beefcake Galka studs anyday, but this Galka is a train wreck lol. Plus that top and those heels don't work well together. Hot mess.

Also, red nails look tacky with pink.

Copying and pasting what worked for me! I have a mediocre PC in the first place, but I had to do this in order to get dual boxing halfway functional.

Go to the settings.xml file in the root Windower folder and add <supersampling>0.5</supersampling> there. If <supersampling>x</supersampling> already exists, just change x to 0.5.
Thanks, that is exactly what I needed. FPS hovers around 20 now and it looks like it did on a PS2 lol.

Jokes aside do this on the settings utility:

General tab:
uncheck "Enable Mip Mapping"

Scren size:
Overlay resolution> Whatever you feel comfortable with
Background resolution> not more than 1024x1024 (this changes the size of the surface used to draw the game 3D "world" and characters and is what will have the major impact on performance)
Menu resolution> Same as Overlay Resolution or something that keeps aspect ratio on your display.

Textures: (these reduce video memory usage)
Texture Compression> High
On Screen maps> Compressed
Fonts> Compressed

Effects:
Uncheck "Enable Bump Mapping" (this reduces detail on textures on walls and ground)
Environmental Animation> Normal or OFF. (this make things grass stop moving)

Also within the game, turning shadows off will give a huge boost on performance. Try turning shadows off before doing these changes outside.

Edit: ooh seems like windower make it all too easy, huh ? (lol, there were replies while I was typing my own reply)

You can also load the Config plugin and set the clipping plane to something crazy (like 0.2, which is barely playable).

Back to this again, I saw somewhere that there was a patch that removed auras like those around torches and the home points. I can't find it now, anyone have a link?
