I thought 12 was still dance recitals and little league? I spent a lot of time at age 12 keeping my activities known to myself. Admittedly, this is because I was masturbating, but the principle remains. These girls were 6th or 7th grade.
Also, I was still doing ballet performances at age 17 and my brother was wrestling at 18, so I'm not entirely sure what point you're trying to make by pointing out that kids have hobbies.
Was more toward the social hobby and parent forced hobbies I was thinking. The age when everyone in your class still does it.
I dunno, guess I just grew up living in Leave it to Beaver without a father figure. Dinner at the table at least one night a week, going to events like a museum or the zoo or the beach as a family unit. Despite being an angst ridden teen (like all teens) while doing family things, I truly appreciate and understand why my mother did it.
I just can't see how a responsible parent would let this go under the radar at such a young age.
Also, 12 seems young to be masturbating that much. Family diner was very common for me too. I honestly can't imagine a life style without it. Even at college my roommates and I would always gather together for at least diner.

Girls grow up a bit sooner than boys.

Despite being an angst ridden teen (like all teens) while doing family things, I truly appreciate and understand why my mother did it. My family ate dinner together every night of the week until around my senior year of high school when schedules got too hectic and at least one person was gone every evening. The rest of us still ate together. For that matter, we still do, albeit when we're all in the same house.
I spent a majority of my free time either fooling around on my N64 (which was in the front room) or reading. I'll bet easy money my parents couldn't keep up with what I was reading since, even then, I could chew through a novel in under 2 days. Is that negligent parenting on their part? Hardly. And that wasn't something I was keeping to myself.
Which is rather the point with these girls and their culpability: they knew they were doing wrong (the definition of legal competence) and actively hid their plans.

Also some talk like these girls were probably hiding C4 in their room and stood in the dark corners making evil laughs and twirling their mustache.
Chances are they just lurked random websites together, found this Slenderman thing and went on a mental trip about it. Stealing a knife from the kitchen isn't hard, so unless they manifested their violent behaviour before I don't see how this ***was predictable by the parents.

I see where y'all are coming from and understand your points on not knowing everything about your child being far more valid than my emotions.
But I just can't help but want to finger point at the parents for some reason. Just the extreme age and brutality of the situation makes it mind boggling hard to understand for me I guess.

It might not even be a case of child neglect.
Maybe the parents like to watch horror films, but won't let their children watch because of the content. Kids being kids, the girls became curious and decided to search online, and got sucked into fiction presented as fact. It's not really a stretch. Kids become curious about things they're not allowed to do/see.
One night when my wife was young and was supposed to be asleep in bed, she and her sister crept downstairs while their parents were watching Alien, and hid behind the couch so they could watch the movie too. My wife was mortified by the experience, but it's the same principle - they were told they weren't allowed to see something, and wanted to know why.
That's always been a pet peeve of mine when it comes to parents in general - they don't often take the time to tell you why.

Ok so here's something I remember from 7th grade. Pay attention cause it's a good one.
Pretext: In 6th grade I stayed over a friends house this one time and the next morning I ended up going to some church with them because his mom was a Sunday school teacher or something like that. It was the only time I ever went to church and witnessed a ceremony or whatever they call it.
I remember thinking, hey this stuff is really crazy. How is it that people take this stuff seriously?
So fast forward a year later to 7th grade. In our social studies class we watched this movie called "Not Without my Daughter." In case you never heard of it, it's about some American couple who goes to Iran and the husband decides to stay there and the wife wants to run away, but not without her daughter. Hence the title.
So after the movie while the class was discussing it, my only thought was who was Allah?
The teacher explained who it was, and I just remember it was the Iranian version of god.
So then I thought what if I could get my fellow classmates to sign a pledge to only follow the words of Allah and pay money to do so.
So for about a week in the boys locker room at the start of Gym class I would give these far out speeches about the trials of Mohammad. In no way from what I remember was it related to the real thing in any way. I just made them up.
I think I just used bits and piece of Greek mythology and replaced Zeus with Allah and made the rest up.
So anyway over the weekend after doing this for the week I made up a parchment out of construction paper.
I wrote out this ridiculous pledge, which most of it was ripped from various Disney movies, like the 'Sword in the Stone' and then came up with the idea that if people were to sign this and break the pledges, they had to either cough up a fee each time, or pay an initial fee from the start, kinda like a retainer.
So on Monday I introduced the 'Followers of Allah' Parchment and just as I thought everyone opted to pay up front when they signed up. It was like a $1 at the time, talking like 1992-93 I think, so I gave everyone a week to come up with the dough.
To my surprise I made a good $60 doing this. I was like, "WoW!" This was amazing to me. Who would have thought I could make money doing this?
Now imagine if I was a kid in 7th grade all over again and tried this today?
I'd definitely be on some sort of terror list, lol.
Yeah that's what I remember about 7th grade.

Let's assume these girls are sane. Which is a hell of an assumption to make in the circumstances, but let's try. What the hell kind of life must they be coming from that they would read a fiction wiki and effectively convert religion as a result? Neo-Nazi groups tend to have a blood-in/blood-out rule (as in, you have to injure or kill to get admitted and can expect to die if you leave), so murder as initiation isn't unheard of, but Neo-Nazis provide tangible benefits rather than some dream castle in the land of fiction.
The more I think about it, anyhow, the more I suspect these girls are either completely batshit insane or genuinely sociopathic and using the kind of really flimsy excuse that only a kid could imagine would work. Their actions are on par with still believing in Santa Claus at age 12 -- I'm sure someone can come in and say they did that, but probably not to the degree that you would devote long months of the warmer parts of the year to being overtly good and behaved in order to qualify for your annual reward.
Maybe people have forgotten how old 12 really is? That was roughly the age that I stopped going to Confession (raised and educated Roman Catholic, for those unaware) and began to have serious doubts about the validity of religion in general. If someone wanted to recruit me to a cult, I'm sure they could have, since 6th graders are easily suggestible, but I was hardly prepared to start worshiping and sacrificing to Mystra, the Goddess of Magic in certain D&D books, in the sure certainty that I'd be able to throw fireballs at my enemies. Not without someone convincing me first, at any rate.

I honestly find this theory significantly more comforting than any other alternative to be honest.
Edit:
The more I think about it rationally, the less sense things seem to make.
If there was only one girl, bat ***crazy or early onset schizophrenia or the like are on the table. But with two of them, just being insane doesn't quite fit.
I'm starting to lean on the sociopaths side. Because little girls are mean to each other as is, just a slightly twisted one could push into murder for fun mentality for both girls.
And then the totally illogical story to back it up just stems from the age and inadequacy in lying.

6th graders are easily suggestible I would say so from my recollection. Especially in 7th grade and 8th grade it was very profitable for me.

Let's see... In 6th grade the only thing that really sticks out was that for some reason somebody started a rumor about me being the 2nd coming of Jesus or something. Then one time I had surgery on my big toe and had to wear sandals for 2 weeks. So somebody found a big white sheet and I just went with it. They called them my Jesus sandals.
So for the rest of that year everyone called me Jesus.

I'm sure these girls will become productive members of society one day.
Future editor at Jezebel / Democrat candidate for President.
On topic: Back in the day (high school) we had a large group of wicca people. That or goth I can't remember exactly. Anyways they wore black clothes and listened to terrible music. What was the point of this story ? I like stories.
Nah teenagers always get into weird stuff. Be it Slender Man patriarchy Cosmo magazine etc.
Basically Hot Topic.

If drugs were involved maybe I can see going easy on them.
OR if they only stabbed her 1 or 2 times....BUT 19 times these girls need to be put away for a LONG time.
After the 1st stab you would think a 12 year old might see the blood and freak out, maybe realize what she did. 19 times there is no help from that.
My daughter is 9 and sometimes i think she is smarter than me. She knows right from wrong and even when she punches her brother, she says sorry if he starts with cry.

There crime is horrible, yes. But to put them on trial as adults. Someone is going to challenge that and win. Now the tough question is how to punish and rebuild these girls to be in socity?
Quote: The 12-year-old girls had been plotting the murder for months, police say.
Morgan E. Geyser was allowed to have two friends over each year for her birthday. This year, she'd celebrate on May 30. That is the day she and Anissa E. Weier would try to kill their friend during a sleepover.
On Monday, the two Waukesha girls were charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court as adults with attempted first-degree intentional homicide, each facing up to 65 years in prison. Their victim, another 12-year-old from Waukesha, was stabbed 19 times by either Geyser or Weier or both, according to a criminal complaint. All three attend Horning Middle School in Waukesha.
Quote: Both suspects explained the stabbing to police referencing their dedication to Slender Man, the character they discovered on a website called Creepypasta Wiki, which is devoted to horror stories.
Weier told police that Slender Man is the "leader" of Creepypasta, and in the hierarchy of that world, one must kill to show dedication. Weier said that Geyser told her they should become "proxies" of Slender Man — a paranormal figure known for his ability to create tendrils from his fingers and back — and kill their friend to prove themselves worthy of him. Weier said she was surprised by Geyser's suggestion, but also excited to prove skeptics wrong and show that Slender Man really did exist.
The suspects believed that "Slender," as Weier called him, lived in a mansion in the Nicolet National Forest in northern Wisconsin. The plan was to kill the victim and walk to Slender's mansion.
Quote: Geyser's mom said they could go and play in David's Park, on S. East Ave., just north of Les Paul Parkway. As they left, Geyser lifted up the left side of her white jacket; the knife was tucked in her waistband. Weier told police she gave Geyser a look with "wide eyes." When asked by police what that meant, Weier said, "I thought, dear God, this was really happening."
Weier said they eventually ended up in the park bathroom where Weier planned stab her friend. Once in the bathroom, Geyser handed Weier the knife, and Weier indicated that Geyser tried to restrain the victim, but Geyser had a "nervous breakdown" and Weier had to calm her down.
Weier then suggested they go for a walk, pointing out a wooded area near Rivera Drive and Big Bend Road. They could play hide and seek, distract the victim, then kill her. Geyser was the first "seeker," and Weier and the victim hid. Weier told the victim where to hide and told her to lie facedown in the dirt. The girl refused. Weier then pushed the victim and sat on her, thinking Geyser could stab her. But the victim began to yell and complain that she couldn't breathe. She was attracting attention, so Weier got off her.
Geyser gave Weier the knife, but Weier said she told Geyser she was too squeamish and gave it back.
Weier said that once Geyser got the knife back, Geyser told Weier, "I'm not going to until you tell me to." Weier said she started walking away from Geyser and then told her, "Go ballistic, go crazy." Geyser said she would go ballistic, and Weier said, "Now."
Weier said Geyser then tackled the victim and started stabbing her. The victim was screaming. Weier said when Geyser got off the victim, the victim screamed, "I hate you. I trusted you."
Weier said the victim tried to walk toward the street but was stumbling. They didn't want anyone to see her, so Weier grabbed her arm and pulled her away from the street. The victim fell. Weier said the victim couldn't breathe, see or walk. Weier told the victim to lie down and be quiet — she would lose blood more slowly. Weier told police she gave the victim those instructions so she wouldn't draw attention to herself, and so she would die. Weier told the victim they were going to get her help; but they never planned on actually doing so. They hoped she would die, and they would see Slender and know he existed. With the victim lying on the ground, they began to back away.
When police asked Weier if she knew what it meant to kill someone, Weier said, "I believe it's ending a life and I regret it." Weier also said, "The bad part of me wanted her to die, the good part of me wanted her to live."

You would think if they thought Slender man was some sort of god they would have looked into his background to find out he is a fictional character that was made for a thread to make up old photos to look like they contained super natural things.
