We're dealing with people who initiated a government shutdown and who are now outraged that the government is, in fact, shut down. Logic isn't their strong suit

Give me a break dude, one side of your mouth you decry that the government is so big and complex that if something happens no single person or entity can be held responsible 'you can't hold Obama responsible for the actions of the IRS/NPS'. Then out the other side of your mouth you say crap like that....
Yes or no question: Did House Republicans make passage of the CR contingent on the repeal or delay of Obamacare?

Obama appoints the Secretary of the Interior who oversees the National Park Service.

Obama appoints the Secretary of the Treasury who oversees the Internal Revenue Service.

In the worst case scenario orders to abuse came directly from the top. In the best case scenario incompetence from the top failed to prevent the abuse. If the only proof you will accept is to personally witness Obama giving the order directly, your standards are biases and unreasonable. He's a politician, politicians LIE.

Wait...who did obama abuse at the national parks again?

I'm not saying obama didn't suggest it himself. I'm saying he didn't have to order it. It would have happened anyways.

Twelve senators sent a letter to the IRS asking them to scrutinize the tea party

When was the IRS the good guy that always did everything right?
is the part I don't get.
Citizens united was enough of a reason to target conservative wackos. Did any of you reactionists ever contemplate that there might be an ***-ton more conservative groups popping up in the wake of the decision that SHOULD have been scrutinized? Even if it did go further up than a small faction being suspicious of groups like that, who says that those groups didn't deserve further investigation. If you're applying for tax exempt status as a political activist group, you should be prepared for the pitfalls of challenging the status quot.

This thread... just. Wow.

Regarding default: Pretty much the entire concept of currency vs. barter is based on the belief of value, rather than actual value.

The US dollar has been a key component of global finance post WWII due to the confidence that the world has had that the US will pay all debts on time. That is a pretty broad and general statement.

The entire financial system is based upon an agreed upon value for something, as well as the confidence that the agreed upon value won't change drastically in short periods of time.

Entertaining the concept that the US will default already shakes that confidence.

And for people that say "Well, we have enough money to pay our interest, so we aren't defaulting":

The government is officially shut down. Yes, some aspects of it are open ("essential" personnel). You may think it is a principled decision. Guess what? Most of the rest of the world thinks you are batshit crazy.

Then you talk about not increasing the debt ceiling, which shakes the confidence *even further*.

To use a rather poor analogy, you don't have to actually bring a bridge down to get someone off of it, you just need to shake it enough so that they fall off.

If they think Obamacare/ACA is such a *** horrible thing for the country, they should first pass a law preventing Congress from being eligible for federal health care/benefits.

6 weeks is still stupid, there's still plenty of uncertainty there, but at least we're getting recognition now that defaulting would be beyond asinine.

Yeah, but Boehner still hasn't show any signs of climbing out of his hole and opening the gov't. He seems to think that he only has to do one and not the other. And worse yet, this 6 week extension puts the drama right around Black Friday, which what a circus that would be.

No kidding, the market has already seen some of the biggest downturns in holiday spending over the last 5 years. The threat of a default on or around the biggest shopping day of the year could have a massive impact on retailers country wide.

The 6 week deadline (if it is 6 weeks from oct. 17th) ends up right on black friday. Great time for uncertainity.

I'm aware of how much of an impact US treasuries impact the global economy. Yes, a US default would be felt worldwide. My point was aimed at the current state of Washington politics, which concerns far fewer people outside the US.

Well, yes and no.

Since the US apparently likes to kidnap and assassinate both US and foreign citizens outside of the US, US politics does have a stupidly large impact on the world as a whole (even taken outside of financial matters).

Would you accept Russia or China blatantly and openly doing the same things the US is? Historically, the answer is no.

Couple of things I learned over the past few days.

Small business owners get a 50% health care tax credit and there is about as much of a Socratic discussion going on in this forum as two dogs fighting over a bone.

Oh yea and the health care site cost roughly 300-550 million dollars.......... AND wait for it....... With a down turned economy and people needing jobs we gave that job to Canadians!

We can't build websites in America?

Well that was pretty much a unilateral move by the executive branch, less politics more foreign policy.

It's entirely possible that a domestic firm either wasn't equipped to do it, would have cost significantly more, or... Procurement is a broken system.

There are a myriad of reasons that went to a canadian firm, but none of them are good enough. They seriously dropped the ball on that one.

I really hate seeing government contracts being outsourced to other countries that the USA is capable of doing. Granted there is going to be technology out there that we have to outsource for, but I really don't think this was one.

When it comes to cost, that really must say something when we can't afford our own people........

Not being argumentative, just pretty much reiterating.
