I don't think that there aren't any "right ones" to turn on or off.
I do however put it as following.

Everything related to myself = Show
Everything related to players outside the alliance = Hide - except for using spells/items
Evades and Miss = Hide (except for party member when I need to count other's shadows)

Party/Linkshell/Tell messages = Hold
Tell Messages = Bell

That's how I put them.
For visuals, I usually have everything on.

You get a sound bell for /tells on the filter.
It'll have a music note when you click on it to hold, hold & music note, or music note.

Depends on what your doing and what you need to see.

Things like Ein where lag is an issue > Filter Everything that isn't self

Things where you really need to see the mob's moves > Need all "special" tabs to be open.

It really depends on the jobs you play but I turn off all damage by others, evades, damage taken, for pt, allies, & others. But I leave the special effect on because for some reason when I turn it off, I can't see when the NM/mob is making a move.

If I was on a healing job, I keep the damage taken on for everyone.

Personally for me on all jobs mine are set as:
Tell - Hold/Chime
Party - Hold
Linkshell - Hold

I show all party spam (parsing, etc)

I hide all alliance damage/evades/attacks, but show specials

I hide all others, show specials.

I show all enemy spam. (parsing, etc)

I hide all NPC.

Pretty much if it doesn't directly or indirectly affect my party I don't care.

Well Guys I usually run theif and Sam, and ATm i got my Red mage to 20, but its all about lag issues.. I know I just re wrote my HD and wiped my CPU clean and re installed everything, but I'm trying to kill the lag beast or at least keep it at bay, that way I can keep my game play, more execessable and feasable, meaning trying to keep Lag at a low.

Speaking of campaing, I love when you get tags and then 30 NPCs decide you need Protect IV at the same time <.<

I filter all the "others" crap, all the "allies" crap, all the "npc's" crap, attacks evaded by me and mobs, attacks missed by me and mobs, and I have tells set to chime.

Still haven't found the campaign one, though...for some reason I see it in the log even though I thought NPC would keep that from happening...

I have almost everything filtered.. Except special actions in my PT and alliance. All dmg/misses/etc that aren't my own are filtered. NPCs are filtered and "other's" actions.

I turned the bell on for /tells too, but it gets really annoying sometimes><;

For me, I turn off pretty much everything except chat and special actions on party/alliance members. Then I go into chat colors and I turn status ailments red.

Yeah it sucks that I must put damage on Screen in campaign battle because there's not a single filter that stops the damage shown from NPCs and people. I turned everything off and still nothing.

I also tried to do it with graphics back when fort smacking was...in exsistance, to try to clear the lag. Oh well. ><;

Is there a way to turn off targeting Campaign NPCs kinda like how you can turn off targeting on pets?

God I wish there was a way to filter that. I'm so sick of having to tab around to get the arbiter, whose standing right freaking in front of me, and targeting everyone BUT him, even with the damn mouse >.<

Edit: And Lucky - LMAO ^^

I don't like filtering anything to "off". I do a few things, but I'd much rather have the option of multiple chat windows.
