I just tried, I have Empathy 5/5 since before update, it seems to instantly give 200 exp (per merit, so 1000 for me) to the wyvern everytime you use empathy.
Also seem to cap with the first Spirit Link.

Fun part is, the exp gain seems to go before it checks your wyvern's current HP. And since the wyvern gaining a lvl fills his HP to full, you don't lose any HP, even if he was missing some.

Voidwatch must count as zoning or something cuz you need to re-spirit link the EXP bonus to the wyvern betwen every fight, its parameters are reset between fights when voidwatcher status wears off.

wonder if that also means we have to wear wyrm mail for every pop, since you need it on when you zone to keep SJ traits on wyvern
