What can we do? Nothing much, I think. I may just be feeling sulky at the moment, but I don't think the average person really has much say in politics anyways. If they want to pass a bill and we protest it, they might pass it anyways. If they don't pass it anyways, they'll sneak it through at some later date or tacked onto the end of some other bill. They will do whatever they please regardless of whether or not it makes sense, whether or not the people want it, whether or not it's constitutionally wrong.

Up here in the North we have our own set of problems, like introducing wolves back into places where wolves belong and have belonged since forever and then being mad when wolves and people clash over it. Ya think? But it seems a lot of these bills that try to 'force' religion are from the South. There's some more examples of that in this video, namely in Mississippi and Arizona.

Don't watch it, Zah! He's quite angry!

I liked TAAs earlier works more than the more recent stuff.

Thunderf00t is much better across the board though he tends to go off on tangents regarding Youtube legal issues. His "Why do people laugh at creationists?" series is well done, humorous and worthy of a view.

My only real problem here is that the views in this thread are so biased... it's like religion is seen as something evil and it causes all that is wrong in the world and people who are theists... well they're not really people and what they want doesn't matter... It's like people mirror what they despise and become what they say they despise but with their own agenda...

I want freedom of speech but that religious guy shouldn't get it because well he'll just bring us all down!

Never seems to be about what's actually fair or right but what people see or feel is...

Freedom of Speech is not manipulating legislation to promote a single religious faith. Give me a break.

Religion isn't inherently 'evil' but when people attempt to unilaterally force it down the throats of our citizens through legislation, indoctrination, obstruction and intolerance then it should be called out for what it is. Such action denies individuals to learn, experience and draw their own conclusions simply because Christianity must reign supreme no questions asked.

It almost sounds like a theocracy but that would be crazy right?

I'm fine with theists worshiping their deities but guess what? That doesn't make them immune from scrutiny when anti-American bills (like this one) are passed. Some simply stick their fingers in their ears and pretend it isn't happening but bills like this in the South aren't pro-theistic bills moreso Christian doctrine with complete intolerance for other religions.

Where are these same southern theocrats when mosques want to be built? Oh right, they're opposing the hell out of it.

The US is supposed to be a country where we're free to choose our own religion but the Christian right doesn't want that because as far as they're concerned this is a country only for Christians and anything less makes you less than dirt. They've even brainwashed themselves so far as to believe the founders were hardcore Christians when the evidence says otherwise.

But who needs evidence when ignorance is in abundance?

Tell me, where are the bills being passed by agnostic or atheist legislators that want to outlaw religion? Oh right, they don't exist but nothing rallies a religion together like an imagined boogeyman.

It's no problem, Leila. LA, MS, and 'Bama are on their own as far as I'm concerned. Not even going to try with those states. LOL! I don't even like driving through them.

I think we can all agree that bills of this nature are dangerous, immoral, and utterly silly. The question is, how ought we proceed from here to actually make some difference?

Sect pretty much summed up my thoughts.

I think people like Flavin would be utterly baffled to hear that I once protested for the creation of a mosque, even having my writing on the topic published quoted in my newspapers.

That's right. Anti-theistic me once tried to help get a religious building built.

Let's see if I can dig that ***up.

I'm not a slave at all Liela. True freedom comes when you come to realize this world means nothing. When that is FULLY realized, it is quite easy to serve the benefit of others, and not to fill as though you are missing out on some personal gain. To know I am not measured by what I have or gain here, to know that My job, my video games, my truck have truly 0 value is actually relieving. We all die, and everything here passes. I don't feel in any way enslaved to try to make this place a close representation of what I believe will one day be complete.

The same logic that fuels daily explosions by suicide bombers and events like the Crusades, the New World atrocities and the Inquisition. Wonderful.

If this world truly means nothing then why do the religions institutions pride themselves on amassing as much power as they can in this realm? The insatiable desire to control the lives of people they scarcely know and the hunger to control the thought processes of all human life if given the chance?

Instead of trying to make this world a better place we're just supposed to throw it all away on the off chance (faith) that everything will be magically fixed by *insert your deity here* because a tome says it will. If that isn't inherently self-destructive well I don't what is.

How about instead of devaluing life the religious do better for the people of Earth to impress the deity they believe sits on that ascendant throne? Oh, but it's far easier to just throw up those hands, say we're corrupted and wait for that cosmic bailout.

so how about that Ra?

It's amusing how we treat religions of old as a huge joke in our current time period. People devoted their lives seriously worshiping these entities for us to make them the playthings of our imagination.

Thor is a superhero now, Mummies are the stuff of B-tier horror flicks, Hercules was a hit Disney movie and a hit TV series, Egyptian gods have become fodder for children's shows, Mesopotamian gods are used in video games and Native American/African folklore have become bedtime stories.

But all of these cultures all got it wrong. I wonder sometimes how the Norse would take their thunder god swinging his hammer alongside a man in a metal suit, a giant green man and a guy draped in the American flag on the big screen.

probably similar to how a certain culture doesn't want their "prophet" to be drawn.

That's because you understand the true meaning of freedom. It isn't a point of either side dominating the other, it's a matter of each side being allowed to do what they see fit, as long as it doesn't incriminate on the other.
