Random Question thread (FFXI related)

Carbuncle.Maletaru said: »It's not burning mountains of gil, it's burning a pittance. Not just to rich people, but to everyone. It's like a single +2 neck a month, if you used it every day (which you won't) for several events (which you won't).
Compared to spending hundreds of millions on REMA, su5 weapons, su3 armor, +2 necks, JSE upgrades, osash, etc. The Hoxne Ampulla gil is a drop in the bucket. If you didn't record your gil before & after, you probably wouldn't even notice it. Especially for short events like a single v25 boss. Even if it's pricy, buying regular equipment is a one and done. Hoxne Ampulla is more like a subscription. In the long run it will cost you more than a kraken club.
Comments like this only demonstrate how detached some peoples FFXI reality is from the one of the average joe.

Equipment always eventually became a standard expectation to get invited into groups no matter how expensive it is, REMA is a good example, so I'm worried it will be no different with ampulla. That's not really a problem with the ampulla as much as the player attitude. If someone's asking for R25+ nyame to do an event or whatever other silly req, that still has a time/economic value. For the cost of one path C rostam (another silly shout req), you could buy the ampulla and repeat every ody v25 where it applies until you cleared it. You'd probably have gil leftover, too.
Of course the ampulla mechanic is a RMT's wet dream. It draws gil from the economy, gives infinite incentive to buy more gil and it doesn't affect the rate of how fast RMT can acquire more gil with bots or mercing.
It's not surprising at all that RMT find Hoxne Ampulla fantastic. I know exactly zero people who are buying gil to fund their ampulla addiction. My impression is that it's mostly used by serious endgame players who are already getting 1.5mil a day from segment farms and people who are stuck on the ladder. Gearing one new job costs more than using the ampulla for months would.
Yes, gil sinks are good for RMT. It's possible the Ampulla ranks highly on them, but I suspect it's less than you think. The 1.1m npc mats that go into damn near every useful synth and many upgrades are probably 5x the sink ampulla is on a serverwide basis. It's still an extra sink, and I still like that. But, to be clear, gil sinks are also beneficial for most players.. do you want them to avoid things that help you because they also help RMT?
Put another way: if it didn't consume gil but was on the rarity of kraken club and cost nearly a billion gil would you still complain about it? It's a very powerful item that provides creep allowing players to complete content they would've failed damage checks on previously. You can get immediate access to it for only ~50m and use it for ages before you get anywhere near that price.

The problem isnt the whales burning their gil, what people do with their gil is their own business, its when the PuG's start demanding it like ML50 or a stage 5 prime.

I've joined plenty of groups, statics, 9b runs, segment farms, climbs, with everyone from high end players to complete newbs. The mindset among the vast majority is that using ampulla is still kinda taboo "DUDE YOU'RE PAYING FOR DAMAGE???? GAAAASSSP", and nobody has yet even mentioned it in any groups or shouts I have ever seen. I haven't even seen scrubs who could benefit heavily from it use it. Everyone still believe it "drains your gil and you'll end up with zero" (categorically untrue, fake.news, broke numbers down, it's very little money spent per event, compared to food/meds you pay for).
I've never seen a single shout for ml50 or stage 5 prime, and I'm on Asura.
I don't think we're going to ever get to the point where people demand it in shouts, it's a tool for those who want to enjoy the increase, but it's not a measure of anything the average player would be interested in splurging on. I've also never seen a single shout for kraken club job in all my years playing. It's just not gonna happen (there will be one idiot that does, but that's an idiot who is getting carried anyways).

Imagine the reverse effect:
You go to fight a V25 xevioso. You tell your teammate they should use a hoxne ampulla. They refuse to use it because they don't want to spend the gil. You time out at 3%.
Don't you think you'd feel like the ultimate dumbass for not spending 200k on a win? Or wouldn't you be pissed that this moron threw away your win to save himself the cost of like...a stack of grape daifuku+1?
It's not wife changing money, people.
It's the same thing as people using NQ food and refusing to eat panacea because you have a WHM. Well, when you wipe you can blame it on their cheapness.
I'm sure there are people using it on segments. ***, I used it for a mythic WS trial. Some people have more gil than they need. I don't see how that's in any way relevant to your decisions though. Nobody's forcing you to use hoxne on segments or limbus runs just because the Joneses did.

In cases like that if youre really so tight for cash, just pool some money as a group, same as the guy who spent/made the aoe food to use for an event. Team game

We all have access to the Asura shout panel. We’ve seen the ML50 and/or S5 prime requirements. They may be fewer and further between, likely because the majority of the players who can meet those requirements don't need PuGs, but to say its never happened is a weak attempt at gaslighting.

In cases like that if youre really so tight for cash,
People VASTLY overestimate how much money you spend with Hoxne Ampulla for normal content. I was in a discord with my old static who felt "spending a mil for a 9b run is not worth it to me". They were wildly off. The cost is much less than the stack of Panaceas you're required to bring to heal yourselves.
In a typical PUG Sortie 8b run, I see a drop in like 150k~240k depending on how weak the other DDs are. If I have to clear the entire D-boss room because I'm waiting for the others (may as well get metal), or if the bosses take longer (B/H fetters running away etc) due to others not being as strong or the other DD dies, the price could be on the higher end. If everyone is pulling their weight, the cost is quite low/reasonable. You don't really swing that much to drain like a mil per event, most damage nowadays are your WS, and you get a handful in per boss.
In my last Apollyon, I had like 100+ WS on DRG. 100k gil for the WS part of your damage. I don't have a way to parse how many melee swings and jumps were done, but the total upper end was like 350k or something. I might do 3 Sorties a week and 3-6 climbs a week. Segments maybe 4x a month. (I don't use ampulla in swart farming). Peculiar Foes once per month if I remember to pop ampulla on NIN or whatever. Total cost at the end of the month is something like 5m that I never notice because it's covered in a month of sparks or one vd ambu or 2-3 seg runs or half a stack of swarts I sell 3x a month.
Now I don't need the extra damage for random trash content, especially Limbus. But I choose to use the ampulla because it's fun (more damage is fun). I wouldn't advocate people who are hard up for gil to use it, but I also don't think it's nearly as expensive if used on an as-needed basis either. Ironically, if more people in a group are using Hoxne Ampulla, each individual person spends less gil. And if you are a struggling player looking to improve your damage, you could argue Ampulla would boost their damage a lot (though chances are if they are struggling, they can't afford the on-demand cost).
*And for all of the complaining about how terrible and boring Limbus is, you'd think people would want to get it over with faster. I'll gladly pay virtual currency to be done Limbus 45 seconds sooner, so I can head on over to the bathroom, cover up the walls and blow my brains out for suffering through that nonsense. ***, I'd pop Ampulla 10x a climb if it meant I could stack bonuses and get 100% QA and be done climbs quicker.

(there will be one idiot that does, but that's an idiot who is getting carried anyways).
Sit in town at my desk while working all day shout watching, and I have never seen a ML50 shout for anything. But if there was one asking for those requirements, it's almost immediately met with shouts trolling the person.
Now, you see plenty of "Prime DD" "Nyame R25+" shouts, but those are mostly buzz words intended to filter out certain players, and even those are minimal (most shouting for that are advanced players who don't want to waste time, so I get it).
ML50/Stage5 prime is not something a normal PUG party leader can reasonably shout for, because then why are you shouting instead of pulling players from your discord groups? I don't see those shouts, and I'm online every single day reading logs deciding which shouts I could join; that's not gaslighting. What's gaslighting is saying you can catch those "fewer and further" in between ML50/St5 prime shouts through a shout portal that's constantly inundated with RMT shouts non-stop.
This is what I see in my log for nearly all shouts during the day (i filter all RMT activity so I only see legitimate shouts):
I'm impressed people can read these logs and catch the few ML50 st5 prime shouts between this garbled mess, but I can't seem to find those same shouts with filters.

Got limbus body, Ashera dropped the next day in trove. lol Such a classic.
But, to be clear, gil sinks are also beneficial for most players. It depends on where they are. If they saved up the last couple of years and sit on a pile of gil then gil rising in value is great for them. If they are broke it's probably not as great because they get less for their stack of crystals or odyssey materials.
I think if the average joe could chose he'd neither prefer gil inflation nor deflation, he'd simple want a stable currency.

It doesn't need much to go from this statement to excluding someone who doesn't want to hoxne because why should you pay for their slack.
Or try viewing it this way: There are 2 DD's asking for a spot, both with decent equipment but one is currently a bit on a budget while the other is known to hoxne 24/7, who would most people pick?
Carbuncle.Maletaru said: »Don't you think you'd feel like the ultimate dumbass for not spending 200k on a win? While we already at spending gil for winning, why not simple pay a merc? Sure it'll cost more but it will be even more effective!
My only real concern with it is they could spoil it in future with other iterations of the same if they found the ampulla well received, wsd+50 for 100k, dtII for some amount, pdl, mab, burst dmg etc but in its current form its fine. Currently only DD get taxed, it's only fair if mages, supports and tank pay their share.
How about:
Tanks get another tier of -50% damage taken that exceeds the -DT cap, 1k deducted for every hit received?
-25k for every MB to deal double damage while exceeding the 99k limit or maybe remove MB wall?
-180k to double your next buffs potency?

Im not sure why you think its so outlandishly expensive unless you just do little / no money making activities
Odys a mil/day
Omens around 5-600k i think depending on swart prices
Sparks are a mil/week
Accos are variable but at min a mil if you do prize powder conversion but you got beitetsu potential mat drops, etc
Dynas basically 500k+ even out of campaign just doing the shared and beelining to boss
Ambus 40~ish mil anywhere from a few days to a month
If someones done most of their progression already that all adds up to an easy several mil and thats not accounting for stuff like actual dyna, trove, crafts, old misc stuff like delve or vagary its easy to get money if you arent lazy(like me)

I think when they changed the skill formula to make it possible to cap enhancing legit at high MLs, they altered it so you can skill your sub as well. Been like that a while.
By Dodik 2026-06-02 16:16:18
If you could +1 your favourite rema but had to spend 2m gil per hour every time you wanted to use it, would you consider that a valid rema?
Would you do all the Rema grind knowing you could make it even better, but you'd have to keep grinding away for that 2m?
Before you answer consider that 2m gil is practically worthless now, but wasn't always and may not always be so.
Will your answer be the same if that was 10m? 100m?

I wonder if you have to have unlocked master levels for this to work, because I was using poison to pull packs before I was job master and never got a skillup, despite wearing the new RSE +1 sets which have good macc as well as fighting non i-level mobs.

Personally? I think i would. Even though this number is a hit off.
Will your answer be the same if that was 10m? 100m?
Everyone has their limit, but 10m would probably be around my limit? Idk, depends on the REMA and how good the +1 is.
I think i get (and agree?) Your point though. For enough benefit, everyone would pay some amount of gil, probably. Where people draw that line varies, largely depending on what your "bank account" looks like and how many pieces of other gear you "need" to get, etc.
As it relates to hoxne, I (clearly) think the benefit is *** fantastic and the cost is very reasonable, so it's a good balance.
If they released the absurd gil items for tanks and mages that were suggested above, I'd definitely be using them and probably (depending on the cost) be suggesting others use them. Sure, DDs, tanks, support, and healers should all bear the burden of gil costs for their jobs, that sounds fair.
Do you honestly think a DRG with a hoxne is spending the kind of gil a BRD spends on gearing their character? How many YEARS do you think it would take to equate to the investment it takes to have a fully geared BRD? Woe is you.
As a matter of curiosity, I pulled all the gear I use on MNK, DRG, and BRD that is AH purchaseable MNK:
Kendatsuba Head, Body, Feet
Moonbow Belt+1
Monk's Nodowa +2
Verethragna
DRG:
Aurgelmir Orb+1
Chirich Ring +1
DRG Collar +2
Moonlight Ring
REMA? I have a lot but rarely use most of them.
BRD:
BRD Charm +2
Blurred Harp +1
Moonlight Ring (x2)
Chirich Ring +1 (x2)
Harfner's Sash
Kaykaus set +1 (5/5)
Moonbow Whistle +1
Mousai set +1 (5/5)
Stikini Ring +1
Carnwenhan, Gjallarhorn, Daurdabla

I make gil a lot faster than I spend it because I play at weird times and can't team up.
I was only half joking about Hoxne, though. Places where you care about squeezing a little extra performance out of your Bard are rare (endgame fights) and don't last long. Source: I spend maybe 2 hours a week in true endgame on Bard, which is currently my Master Trial job.
I would love a material gear upgrade, but if you ignore DA then the HQ2 Hope set's shine comes off quite a bit. I can't justify farming Limbus enough to uncurse it, let alone augment it, when I could instead just use Hoxne. Maybe the legs some day? I'm spending my time actually farming R25 Nyame now, finally, and that easily takes priority.

Honestly, my issue with Hoxne, and any future iterations of things like it, is that everyone always knows that it's the top end damage piece for almost any job.
You'll always know your damage could have been better if you'd used it etc. Just like with HQ food. So it creates a a lot monkey/lizard brain plays of, "I know I shouldn't spend this on a Segments run, but someone is parsing, and I have to PWN!"
Beyond that, it infringes on WAR's identity and balancing act vs. other DDs. WAR can pretty easily get 100% datk, that's kind of its jam. Now any job with Hoxne can do the same, without any sacrifices. Like, sure, WAR doesn't have to pay, but I'm pretty sure in just a couple more months we're gonna be seeing DRKs and DRGs in full Limbus sets sporting large amounts of Quadruple or Triple attack on top of 100% from Hoxne(so they'll have attack rates of like 2.2 and such), and it just feels terrible that WAR has no real avenue to keep up(all Triple or Quad gear available to it comes at too great a cost to use). And it's not just those jobs, either. MNK, NIN, RDM, PLD, RUN, BLU, DNC, THF, and BST. All of these get to sport high amounts of Triple or will, and then get to add Hoxne on top. Not all of them are going to out do WAR at the drop of a hat, but many of them will make it effectively worthless.
This might sound whiny, but I don't like items(or spells) that invalidate job identity/traits. It's basically another RDM + THF situation but with an item instead of a spell. Why ever bring THF, when RDM will sport more offensive capability on top of all of its mage utility? Pretty soon, high end stuff gonna be like, "Why bring a WAR, when you can just have Limbussy Hoxne DRK or DRG or MNK?"
Cause like, WAR is just the job that hits stuff. Twice.
All these other jobs have identities and special abilities and traits that pertain to doing special things like Inhibiting TP, crowd control, unresistable defense down, healing, pet shenanigans, and niche specialties. With Hoxne, they get all of that and WAR's identity, too.
So like, when is WAR gonna get a Hoxne equivalent that gives it somebody else's identity? It basically gets nothing from Hoxne.
By Nariont 2026-06-02 22:50:41
While i agree with the whole job identity thing THFs still well ahead in dmg even if rdm can pump its TA to the 90~s or so imo, same for DRK vs WAR just cause WAR brings more burst dmg i think + retal is its own TP injection that drk cant really replicate.
As it currently stands I'm not sure it's changed any jobs standing exactly, though it has certainly pushed a few up a good ways i.e mnk and drk, though that could be more of a content issue maybe. EDIT: Well, mnks probably gone up a rank or two the overall boost hoxne gives tht job is nuts
And while WAR doesnt get as much of a boost it does also benefit from Hoxne as it can shift all its DA gear over to STP, s'minor but still a decent boost i think. WAR, like THF also has seemed to shift from being the job that can swing twice alot to the job that swings twice a lot but also hits a lot harder on those swings(DA dmg), though white dmg has taken a bit of a back seat for some time
Another thing that got invalidated (again) is mythic AM3s, its just better to use hoxne, but those have largely been shelved anyway, still sad

I agree with the "feels" of your post, but this is so far off.
People aren't bringing WAR because it has DA+100%, they're bringing it because it has:
Access to all 3 damage types (and strong damage for all 3)
Warcry
Tomahawk
Sturdy TP sets
Good 1hrs
None of that has changed, at all. WAR is not at risk of being toppled by any of the jobs you listed, any time soon.

It doesn't need Hoxne. It has the most utility out of every DD job in this game outside of maybe BLU, and BLU is still cast to the shadow realm. Go look at every single comp for Gaol V25s; it almost always includes a WAR vs all of the other DD jobs. WAR has sat at the king's position for the better part of the last decade in terms of pure party comp and DPS role. It's not "hurt" with the addition of Hoxne, it just gains less from it. Does Fighter's Roll "take away from" the identity of WAR and give it to other jobs? Does Monk's Roll take away MNK's identity?
Cause like, WAR is just the job that hits stuff. Twice.
Probably trolling but I'll bite. Last I checked, WAR still
-Can use all damage types and a large range of WS, extremely well (no other job has the range of WS WAR has).
-Can effortlessly cap Double Attack without any extra enhancement
-Has insane crowd AOE and TP generating ability in Retaliation/Full Cleave
-Full toolkit of Attack/Evasion/Defense down WSs to aid party DPS
-TP Bonus to party via Savagery Warcry which is singularly the most powerful buff in the game that a DD can use
-Can bypass special resistances (extremely useful for WS walls), effectively boosting everyone's DPS substantially
-Has the 2nd or 3rd most OP SP in the game. You don't remember MS Resolution WARs a decade or so ago just zerging through Schah and WoC? Still busted to this day <<Deontay Wilder Meme>>
Even among common players, WAR still is seen as more valuable than DRK/SAM/DRG just based off of what it adds to the group. There's no other job more valuable to standard comp than WAR in the DD slot.
By LightningHelix 2026-06-03 06:15:01
If WAR needs to be given more/stronger identity, make something better than Loxotic Mace +1 and don't put any other jobs on it.
Not even joking!

What content is both important enough to spend hoxne gil on and weak enough to survive in that?
(I don't doubt that it parses amazing if you really want to show off in Omen or something.)
For those of you that visit Bg you already know the premise of this thread but for those that don't, it's simple.
Quote: This thread is for off-the-cuff questions that don't merit a full topic to answer. 'What should I wear for my level 65 pup?' 'What's the best way to learn the Qutrub Blu spell?'
General Guidelines.
Any questions goes be it FFXI related or not this community has a plethora of people surely one will be able to assist you.
Please don't bash people for asking questions hating someone for seeking knowledge even if you deem it a stupid thing to ask makes you look like an even bigger tool.
If your answer is on the large side either providing a link or spoilering the answer might be a good idea to help reduce the thread size.
