Ok so I saw the thread was about spanking kids, Jet made the thread so instantly thought "Yeah it's gonna be this ***again" but against my better judgement I read on anyone, to my credit I got to page 3 before I realised it had just gone down the same route as that previous thread ages ago.

Anyway my 2 cents on this whole thing is that children can be annoying, they live to see how far they can push the boundries but as adults we are far more intelligent than children and should be able to find alternative methods of punishment to spanking.

That said there are times when nothing works, what is the point of telling them to stand in the corner or sit on the step repeatedly when it doesn't work? Sometimes they need a light tap on the arse to let them know they've done wrong.

Finally, as for this "study" I just had to read the quotes to know their agenda, the authors of this study seem so against spanking you can't help but wonder if there is a certain level of bias in their findings.

I'm not totally for spanking, but I don't think it's wrong either as long as it's not excessive/abusive. Kids are smart and learn fast, once they understand the parent will only say "No, don't do that", they'll do it anyways because they know nothing will happen to them.

Good example I can give is, a kid grabbing/pulling a cat tail. The cat will bite him, it doesn't make the kid IQ drop because he was hurt in the process. What you need to do as a parent is to explain to the kid why the cat bite him once he calms down.

The same logic should be applied to spanking. That way the kid understand why he can't do X thing and what are the consequences.

despite the study I still don't even go along with that assumption, there's just too many factors to determine that ie: genes.
you keep mentioning this study and falling back on it and making the same arguments over and over to everyone that disagrees with your viewpoint. show me the the demographic covered in this farce that were spanked growing up and went on to lead good, productive lives. probably cant because the spanking naysayers, yourself included, refuse to believe that those types of people exist. spanking =/= brain or emotional damage.

spank your child if the situation warrants it or dont, its up to you and its also up to you to handle those situations responsibly so that it becomes a learning experience for the little person on the receiving end.

It's so wrong and inacurate it makes it even more funnier haha! Now let's send this to the Party Québécois so they can debate on it for hours and find it outrageous that the characters weren't speaking french.

<3 Canada!

Actually, I still want to visit Canada at some point. I heard Vancouver is gorgeous! My brother and a group of his friends went fishing there one Spring Break while we were all still in university. I was so jealous!

EDIT: By the way, (/sigh) another spanking thread?

It is Jet's goal in life to create a spank free world! Or at least to tell you that you are an abusive parent if you spank your child. lol...

Vancouver is the best place to visit in Canada. Quebec(French Canada!) & Ontario are good destinations too, avoid other provinces at all cost >.>
Canada is cool. Imo it's really not all that much different from the states. I haven't spent very much time in the cities but I do go up to a cabin occasionally for the fishing.

Skimmed the topic.

Let people decide how they want to raise their children by themselves. Ill add to the i was spanked and turned out fine. Alot of 90s and earlier kids were spanked and im pretty sure we all turned out fine aside from the obvious differences from being raised a certain way.

It's Vancouver area that has great skiing, right? I haven't gone skiing in ages! I've goofed around and looked at real estate in Quebec and Ontario. (I was having sort of a quarter-life crisis last year.) I wish Texas had some of the ummm...errr..."Europeaness" that cities like Montreal and Quebec (city) have to offer. (I shuttled back and forth from the US to Europe while growing up since we have family all over Europe. I miss it. :() Then again, you can get that in any northern US metropolitan city.

I don't know about that!

Quote:

Yes, it's the best area in North America imo. (I'm sure Europe/Asia have better places, I have yet to go there ... soon ...)

Well, look at that! We have our own travel agent!

I've had the travel bug for two years now. Little weekend trips around the state aren't cutting it. I need to use all my vacation time for Europe. I've learned that you can't just go overseas for a week without feeling rushed. Especially when you have family obligations. If I went to Europe recreationally without telling anybody I would get reamed by my family! It happened in college when I went to Paris and Venice with my BF. My grandfather found out that I had a layover in Frankfurt, and was so angry that I didn't meet up with him for coffee.

Canada wouldn't be a bad choice. Life has just become more and more confining after college. I still get the impulse to just go.

Only place I went outside Canada is Cuba, so I'm not much of a travel agent =(

Doing a small trip this summer to florida, then most likely Europe next year ... unsure where yet in Europe. After that I'd like to visit Japan, something like 1 week in Tokyo and 1 in Okinawa (Heard great things about Okinawa)

Two to six weeks in Europe depending on how much you want to see. Don't do tour groups! You'll be rushed, and you'll have to deal with people bitching about innocuous side trips that you didn't want to do in the first place.

1st ***: "Waaahhh! I want to see the Moulin Rouge!"

Everybody else: "Oh! That movie. Well, we have to see it now."

My thoughts: "*** the rest of you! I'm going to run around Sac La Cur."

(The BF and I met up with them later.)

PS Another thing about tour groups...An hour in The Louvre? Seriously?

Late on the everything, but..

Articles like these baffle me to no end. Why publish the best workaround for people's outdated and abhorrent treatment of children? The long term effects of spanking wouldn't be a problem if people were educated to realize that it's entirely inappropriate to begin with. Violence, or the threat of violence, is a completely ridiculous and deplorable method of raising a child.

tl;dr(didnt read half the posts in thread)

i think its BS, BUT i also dont agree with spanking...i also dont agree with half of the studies and crap today. All the money wasted on studies about...

-spanking kids
-how early we start watching tv
-the shows we watch(ie bugs bunny is bad, cookie monster cant eat cookies)
-video games create murderer's
-etc etc etc.

All the things people what? 20yr old + grew up on...yet Its horrible to do now a days? I mean as far as i know im perfectly normal(am 27). I play all sorts of video games, i watched bugs bunny every saturday morning with my dad from probably before i could walk and on, yet your a horrible parent to let them watch tv for any length of time i think before the age of 3-4? I think people have too much time on their hands to create these studies...its just the flavour of the week. Next week it'll be something completely different out of left field that we should never do.

interesting point.

also as to people earlier about the article I've said at least twice already that I'll look into finding the actual research published later.

Not even gonna say it's a matter of opinion, just asking what you'd describe the various levels of corporal punishment? I mean, for example, I was spanked exactly twice as a child. I also knew kids for whom twice would be a normal Saturday afternoon. I never knew, but know of, kids having lives very much worse than that. So... who's parents fail, if any? All?

If you go to Canada, I suggest BC or Quebec. Prairie provinces are boring, IMO, and Ontario doesn't have much to offer than the USA doesn't have. Maritime provinces are also sucky.
