I'm noticing one issue with all the people choosing melee weapons. I see people asking on whether they're fast zombies or slow zombies but no one is asking if the infection is strictly saliva or a complete blood infection. If it's blood a melee weapon can be your worst nightmare.
One good swing and you have the infection all over you. Get it in a open cut or your eye and guess what, you now have the infection. I'd put a melee weapon as last resort.
Also learn to make fire out of anything you can. It is the almighty purifier. :)
Dork note: When I worked late and was waiting for my train I'd play out zombie scenario's at my station. Where I'd go from there, first place to hide, yadda yadda yadda.

The main aspect of any zombie attack is to idle/hide and test the zombie and start from there.
1. CAN THEY SEE?
2. CAN THEY HEAR?
If option 1 we are totally ***. Option 2 can be easily avoided. Both 1 and 2 get ready for a ***storm.
Edit: Speed is not a main issue at all over the values of this 1 and 2.
According to the survival guide, zombies use all their senses equally. Unlike us who mainly use sight.
