what i also wonder. anyone know where "exactly" in Japan they have their servers(region city etc.)?
because as it looks, the nuclear plant in question seems to have meltdowns in more than one reactor right now. if the worst of all cases should happen + bad wind directions(can change anytime) and they have all their servers for instance in the tokyio region, this could be a very very looooong outtime.

Although I'm kind of curious where they're located too, it's easy to say that uh.. if the worst should happen..
yeah *** xi I hope they get safe and run their *** far from whatever radiation/cloud/meltdown as fast as they can.
lol
yeah, im just glad that i dont live near a nuclear plant over here. ours arent exactly overly safe too, even if we dont have that drastic earthquakes

Secondary servers are an option if implimented at secondary sites, Similar to PSU(Phantasy Star Universe) Having separate servers (different platforms/nations) where if they did have it syncronized on both, there could be the possibility of diverting connection to side #2, but as said, expensive, not able to just be done in a heartbeat. Sadly i doubt the SquareEnix NA site is more than customer support, marketing, research, potentially translation, in summary, secondary international staff. While it is possible, at the same time its on the likelyness of them shipping the servers cross seas and plugging them in, too expensive, timeconsuming, and takes up valuable resources. At this juncture theyre cutting power i assume to provide power to emergency services (such as rescue equipment to save lives and restore stability) in an effort to push out of the crisis at hand. That said, it sounds selfish, but i do hope they return soon as i do enjoy this game. Though if anything could be considered positive in this all, if time keeps ticking, i am running low on traverser stones. Anyway my best wishes go out to those experiancing the hardships and i hope for a speedy, and hopefully recovery if one is possible.

sure its expensive, but if this problem is "long-time" they might actually indeed put the servers on a plane or ship and get them to San Francisco(or wherever). load them up, plug them in, shouldn take longer than a month, prolly less.
edit: think im gonna do something oldschool now, which is Civilization IV.

I urge the staff of SE to take our monthly subscriptions and donate them to helping with the humanitarian efforts underway in Japan. My 2 accounts and 10 mules see nothing wrong with doing this.
stfu about losing a week or two of gameplay, nerds. tens of thousands of people are dead. millions are without power, food, water, medicine, porn, work, loved ones, etc... and all you care about in your pathetic little world is not being able to log in to a GAME?? (and by "pathetic little world" I mean your parents basement).
natural disaster > ffxi. deal with it.

As a business in good standing, it was wise of SE to not charge for the time (up to the end of the month) for the gap of inactive service. However, one cannot legally continue to withdraw funds for an inactive service and redirect it to any cause or purpose including donations. It would be a lawsuit nightmare. However, what would be nice is to give the option to SE to have our billing cycle unaltered and given as a donation to Japan for humanitarian purposes. I know I'd certainly do this, as my billing cycle has been static for years, and I can live without FFXI for a few weeks, even if it's unwillingly.

This is being discussed on other threads already, but I'm fairly sure that would be illegal.
The most they could do is set up some sort of donation option for people to choose but even that would probably have tons of legal issues.
I'd most expect to see something like a link on their website to an already existing organization that you can donate to.

Hey involuntarily force people to donate to Japan. SOUNDS GOOD TO ME.
At least it is not as dumb as people wishing they bill us.
are you HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE? i said nothing about forcing you to donate. I don't think SE has any legal obligation whatsoever to give you a free month of service to start with, so stfu.
and it's exactly the same as people wishing they bill us. you get billed every month. why should this month be any different?? you shouldn't get a bill because mother nature decided to *** some ***up in Japan?
you are precisely the *** that my "stfu about losing a week or two of gameplay, nerds" comment was directed at. Thank you.

Yeah, at best they can give us an external link to a more prolific and notable organization to donate to, such as the Red Cross.
There would be all sorts of legal and paperwork snags having money routed from a corporation like SE and funneled to another organization. Plus it'd just be a pain in the *** to track and isolate even voluntary service charges to another location, even if only for one month.

It's illegal to charge customers online (or in given, I believe) without providing a service in return. In this case, they'd be charging us while FFXI is down, meaning we couldn't play the service they'd be providing us, hence getting the month free. Seeing as we don't know if it's only going to be one week or a few months or whatever, makes no sense for them to charge us.

I'm sure SE has an accounting department that shows how much revenue they make every month from every subscription across the world after all their expenses have been met for that month. THAT is what I am saying they should donate. I'm not saying "Hello, I'm Brewtus from Carbuncle...take this month's charge from me and donate it".
I'm saying don't give us a free month because of a week's worth of interrupted service (as I don't think SE is legally obligated to do, but they do it to keep the idiots quiet), but instead take all the revenue from this month and donate it to the cause in some way.
no need to overthink this, really.

There's nothing to overthink.
There are many legal obligations and inabilities that hinder this, albeit thoughtful and benevolent idea of yours. SE simply can't forcibly take people's money for time of inactive service, nor can they redirect those funds to any organization or cause, even under voluntary donations. It simply requires too much work and legal hoops to jump through to even remotely make it possible.
Best thing is to simply donate directly to a humanitarian effort organization such as The Red Cross.

You can continue enjoying being wrong i guess.
Nearly everything you just typed is flawed in one way or another.
Also, I do feel a little bad for people who are going to donate that actually believe their money will actually help. Ask Haiti if it got all those dollars the US donated.

Haiti is a third-world hell hole and always has been. Their donations were pocketed by their corrupt government. Japan is a totally different story. Incomparable as far as I'm concerned.

True. Although the key is knowing where your money goes.
Going to the source of humanitarian organizations are probably your best bet. ie: salvation army/red cross etc.

Yep. But even then you would be surprised how much of that money gets tied up in red tape etc. Then somehow magically gets redirected to other things.
