iirc the basic reasoning was to keep the site simpler/neater/more efficient, could you image the load times if everyone had a signature?

A signature would only separate posts apart, having a nice clean layout I feel is best.

I mean if somebody wants to see sigs, I'm sure there would be a way to have some custom css loaded over the page (I believe greasemonkey would allow you to achieve this) to recognize a user name and attribute a picture to it.

not enough boobs being squeezed in people's faces, that's the problem.
As great as signatures would be, I feel like that would detract from the flow of this forum. Half of the fun is having that quick break between posts. I feel as though we have enough personalization from the avatars and the different colored lines for those of us who have them.

Exactly, this whole theme is about simplicity being organized. We don't need any special background to spice things up. Sometimes simple really is better.
