Prebuilt desktops (though customized) are worth it if you have no clue at all as to what you are doing and don't have anyone to do it for you for free or super cheap.

Otherwise, build-your-own is the way to go.

Online. There are quite a few sites that have pre-built packages or the ability to choose each piece that's in it and they build it (though this is fairly pricey). What is at wal-mart/best buy is exactly what you are paying for, a cheap piece of crap.

If you have to buy a premade, do it from newegg... just stay away from CyberPC. If you have a friend that can build one, even better.

Best Buy tends to be overpriced... You can still get a good system for a good price there, but you have to do your own shopping rather than let those idiots who use WoW as a benchmark for everything, tell you what system you need.

I got mine from there, it's a refurbished Asus (will probably be my last pre-built, my computer bit the dust out of the blue and I wanted a new computer that day) I've had it for a couple years now and it still runs great and can handle just about anything I throw at it.

Unfortunately IBuyPower and CyberPowerPC are the only places that will construct for you. But from what I hear quality is hit or miss...

Edit: At a reasonable price.
Of the two IBuyPower tends to get better reviews.

I get everything from Newegg when I can plan ahead.. If I discovered I need more thermal paste after I've taken everything apart or like I mentioned above my computer just dying out of the blue, then I'll have to turn to other sources.

Nope. It's very dusty but I can't even afford a can of air until tomorrow. :p

This is why I always recommend after market cooler even if you don't overclock.
They keep your CPU cooler thus less wear and tear from heat.
