Financial illiteracy (and straight up illiteracy) are what make the market function. Financially literate society would tell apple to go *** itself etc.

Yeah, imagine building an economy system by making the assumption that greed doesn't exist.....tell me how that would work. I can't imagine.

It's way more practical to build a system that assumed everyone has greed and give people a fair chance to make money using their greed, not taking their chance to make money away and tell them "greed is no good". That kind of system simply aren't gonna work. You can't take greed away from humanity with policy.


If everybody in an economy is a shareholder, or at least people all have a very good chance to become shareholders. IMO, it would be utopia....or at least close.

Don't you think we should work towards that goal not the other way around?

IMO a rich society doesn't mean everyone has equal wealth(never gonna happen), but even people in the bottom can be self sufficient and have a comfortable life. And that's really only doable if everyone becomes shareholders by owning assets and let money make money for them, plus low inflation.

Higher inflations and tax contradicts that goal IMO. When you can't save, you can't buy any money generating assets and you become poor forever.

There is actually another way to lower housing prices: make actual business/tech investment more profitable than real estate so money go to stocks and business investment instead of real estate.

I have observed real estate price growth in my region slow down since AI boom, because AI supply chain industry siphoned most of the capital in the market. When people are no longer interested in making money from real estate due to lower investment return than AI, housing price goes down.

In the past decade real estate industry was the most profitable and biggest industry sector in Canada. That's why housing price in Canada keep going up crazy: everybody and their mother with money invest in real estate instead of stocks/business because real estate makes more money than investing in business. So real estate price goes way up because it siphoned a lot of money. It's actually not a healthy economy if real estate industry has such a huge gain.

If Canada has highly profitable tech sector like US does and capital goes there instead, it should solve some of the housing price issues.

"Investing" in housing should be illegal. Full stop.

Houses are to be lived in. Not bought and sold for profit. or rented for profit. They are not assests. They are not commodities. They are dwellings. And exclusively dwellings.

There are entire businesses centered around buy-for-rent properties and that includes insurance companies, banks that only mortgage for buy-to-rent and companies that specialise in buying and selling only buy-to-rent properties.

Why would the very companies that make profit off buy-to-rent support cheaper buy-to-live properties.

They obviously wouldn't. No one would ever allow the existing system to be altered.

If system is democracy and large amount of people don't want to alter the system, that means the system probably benefits more people.

I don't mind people invest in real estate, but I think it's more ideal if investment in technology yield more return than real estate. So money goes to technology and make our life better.

At its most basic capitalism IS using money to make money rather than using labor to make money.

This includes, of course, paying labor to make money for the capitalist.

Real estate is not housing.

Real estate prices go up because its EXPENSIVE to make more land.

Housing prices go up for hundreds of different reasons. The single biggest reason here in the US of A is urbanization.

Land is easy.

Every home in america has 3 homes worth of lawn. Stop coveting grass and we triple the living area.

We could have 100 million tiny homes up in a year. with no lawns. except that it would destroy the housing market and cause a depression. ironic.

No profit in a 500 sqft starter home. unless it's a trailer, and you're charging $700 lot rent. Then we'll build 100 million of THOSE.

Land might be easy...but the right land sure isn't. If you're comfortable with living in the boondocks because you can take care of yourself, you can still get amazing value.

Even in the cities there's space. Gentrification baby. Exactly like in Shameless.

Unfortunately a lot of land is public entity owned and cannot be redeveloped.
