My dog, when we first got him, was the same exact way. We know he was beaten and we showed him a lot of extra love and attention. Now he's super clingy. He also had a bad habit of peeing on people who he was scared of (teenage boys). >.>

They do grow out of it and learn to trust you after some time. ^^

I only have two months to take this one back though. Got the ghetto set up going right now. Using my ipod headphones to hear and the headsets to talk lol.
