Well... turns out it was actually a Tire Handler for tractor trailer tires at a tire recycling plant. Basically my job is to offload hundreds and hundreds of tires that are bigger than I am, and load them onto a conveyor belt that takes them up to this shredder. Today, my first day, was an easy day. They were doing a blade change with the shredder, so all I had to do was go get tools from across the plant, and then bring them to the maintenance guys. Got to hand tighten some bolts, insert the blades and fingers into the shredder. Some of those shredder pieces weigh like 70 pounds. After lunch I got to offload some tires. I'm really bad at it, and I'm not in shape, so after like, an hour and a half I was seeing spots. Tomorrow is going to be interesting. I've got a feeling they're gonna tell me I'm too slow at some point, but really all I can do is try my best and hope that they don't go, "Well, this temp isn't working out. Get another one. Sorry man, we're sending you back to the temp agency." On the brightside, my co-workers are awesome guys seems like. Also one of them is some dude I had a weightlifting class with in freshman year of high school. Ain't seen him in 12 years, remembered him right away though. I hope I can make this work, because it pays $11 an hour. It will take about three weeks for your body to become acclimated to the job. yawwnnnn

Yeah they gave it to me along with all the required PPE. Hard hat, neon green vest, gloves, and the back strap.

My grandpa is about to 90 next month and he has his own hauling business (gravel, sand, etc.). He'll still lift his dump-truck tires by himself. I don't know how he does it.
Had a miniature heart attack moment, pulling some of the tires down from the stack in the back of truck(stacks are high, pull one down the wrong way, get 200 pounds of tires toppling over on top of you). Also one of them fell to the ground, bounced and turned sideways, and hit me in the nuts. I doubled over for a few seconds, and the supervisor was like, "Whoa, are you ok?"

Slept next to nothing last night and that little I did I had an incredibly horrible nightmare.

You gotta be careful. this whole "good young backs" ***, that people seem to so ignorantly espouse, is one of the factors that leads to more and more young people seeing workplace injuries at an ever increasing rate every year.
I *** up my back because my employer had me condition myself to pulling and pushing heavy pallets on and off of trailers at a warehouse in the non-conformable receiving district, then instead of sending one of two already conditioned employees, they sent me to do a lot of major twisting and turning. My doctor, and the third party doctor they brought in because WCB didn't like that company's doctor, said I was lucky I wasn't paralyzed, but I'd lost a lot of my former abilities, and neither expected I would be able to run again, considering I used to play football. but yeah, it takes a good 3 weeks of constant work to acclimate yourself to a strenuous job position, and that's if they teach you to do it right, and to use the proper tools for the job. If you think you can't handle something yourself, ask for help. |
