Highly underrated and generally overlooked is the 2 season Birdy the Mighty, a very very VERY good anime that I loved and wished there was more of.

Edit: Darker than black is pretty cool, but leaves you with a cliff hanger
Oh yeah, that kid was pretty meh but overall I loved the anime.
An underrated one imo is Ginga Densetsu Weed. Opening is here
not sure what most peoples speed is on this but one i found a few years back, it was very ground breaking at its time for its cinimatography and features a combination of 2D digital cel animation, 3D computer modeling, and digital special effects. Was called "Ergo Proxy". It was done up by Manglobe for WOWOW satellite network in Japan in '06. Since then it has been brought to the U.S. and re-rendered in English with some very good voice acting. its a 23 episode show so you got some viewing time with it. A very quality piece of work.
I'd say Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood was one of the best animes I've watched in awhile.

I have no idea if this has been mentioned before in the post because I'm too lazy to look, but, Claymore was awesome all the way through.Eden of the East is also really good, but a little short, I wanted more.
Eureka Seven: AO, second season of an original BONES series. There's only about 13 episodes out now translated by sub groups. Loved the original Eureka Seven if you haven't watched it check that out, it's real worth it.

AO is kinda ***compared to the original though, IMO :/ Waaay different.
The original was great yea, but it looks like they taking a different route with the story of AO. Still, it's interesting to watch and kind of curious what's going to happen up until the end.
That new rock lee spin off is garbage. Soo depressing

I haven't watched like... 10-13 but they don't explain enough stuff in this series >_> It's like they keep it vague to make the bad guy seem "cool" but he just looks like a douchey bishounen.

12 & 13 start explain much more, I was gonna wait until it finished to watch the rest but it seems like some questions are kinda being answered.

If you're into drama/friendship anime, Clannad ~After Story~ is a staple. I'd call that my absolute favorite anime. Elfen Lied is my second favorite, very violent though.
