FFXI LGBT Community, Who Are You?

My mother was diagnosed with Stage III Ovarian Cancer that metastasized to her abdominal region. Within a few months after her diagnosis, the essence of my family’s world revolved around my mother. We truly weren’t ready to take on the responsibilities, decisions, and emotions that care givers were required to accept; we were bludgeoned by life. My mother required round-the-clock care; I took the “night shift” to have some time alone with my mother after long school days. One night, as I sat in the recliner waiting for my mother to fall into slumber’s hands, I had an epiphany. As organisms, we are governed by the laws of time. I will never be able to apply the hours I have spent carelessly, on another cause; time is finite. I was capable of investing my potential to better my life, my community, and my future patients– many who have not yet been born– but, I chose not to. I was ashamed to even say that I had “tried”. Tears began to run down my cheeks.

Repetition; maybe use a pronoun.

This part is a little ambiguous. Do you mean that you spent hours carelessly on another cause ? Or that you carelessly spent hours that cannot now be applied to another cause ? In any case, the comma after "carelessly" is agrammatical.

In general, there should be a space on either side of any dash you use to set aside an idea from the rest of your sentence. Also, "many who have not yet been born" should be "many of whom have not yet been born."

The period goes inside of the quotation marks.
