The vote to repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell has failed in the Senate, as the cloture vote was blocked by Republicans along party lines.
They were willing to vote down the entire Defense Spending Authorization Bill to prevent its repeal, meaning the military now has no budget for 2011.

Nope. But at one point half the people I worked with were. (Creative fields like game design tend to lean that way more than the general population, I've found.) My roommate is too. So I have a vested interest in matters pertaining to LGBT rights.

Things like this make me have serious doubts about society. It is as if we live in a country of hypocrisy. Being black and gay I would or have had faced some adversity with both blacks and other minorities because of my orientation, even with some members of my family. This is one of many examples of frustrations we face, yet its ok to make a big deal about who sleeps with who. As I said before, if people do not want gays in the military they might as well not have minorities in the military if they want to go backwards about this.
Normally I'm patient about things like this but it has just been getting frustrating dealing with society lately. It just makes me want to be one of those fanatical activists, you know? So please excuse my rant folks.
My take on Don't Ask, Don't Tell is this: right or wrong, homophobia definitely exists - especially among the highly socially conservative military.
Therefore, if military experts tell me that, because of this fact, my presence as a homosexual in the military would damage its ability to function, I am willing to believe it. I think it's disgustingly ***-backwards, but I believe it. Thankfully I don't want to be a soldier anyway. >_>
In other news~ today has to be one of the most emotionally distressing days I've had in awhile. ._.

Yeah it can go either way really. I mean there were some guys on my boat that were very obviously gay... no one cared. One actually ended up having to tell because of a rather odd set of circumstances.
And well being on a submarine might have helped since we tend to be less homophobic and more close knit community than alot of the military.
But you can imagine that someone somewhere would make a big deal about it especially in high stress situations. And problems can occur and such. I remember a story of my one guy a couple decades ago was in the showers in bootcamp and one day people noticed he was staring at other guys... needless to say he got the ***beat out of him. Not saying it would be common or even a decent amount but it would be enough to cause problems
