I play FFXIV, and their launcher is fine. You get way too bent out of shape when FFXIV is mentioned

I wouldn't mind some actual merchandise too. I don't think XI has anything as marketable as the XIV job icons are, but maybe some keychains/magnets/whatever with the emblems of the nations or acrylic statues of some of the heroines/villains? I tried finding some XI-themed gifts for friends who used to play and there really wasn't much out there on SE's store or Etsy/etc.
Blind box vinyl figures of iconic characters and enemies.
Series 1 could be yagudo, orc, quadav, and goblin (melee and caster variants of each), kindred, mandragora, korrigan, and citrullus as a chase figure.
Series 2, heroes of Vana'diel: Lion, Prishe, Aphmau, Lilisette, Arciela, Iroha, Cornelia, Zeid, Trion, Pieuje, Ajido-Marujido, Star Sibyl, with Nashmeira and Arciela II as chase variants (... and if you want to disagree on the second half, that's cool, I tried to pick two from each nation storyline but there aren't necessarily two good choices for each nation?)
Series 3, villain time. Shadow Lord, Ark Angels, Lilith, Eald'narche and Kam'lanaut, Disjoined One, Tzee Xicu the Manifest, Overlord Bakgodek, Za'Dha Adamantking. Companion set of Promathia, Hades, and Cloud of Darkness because they're way too big to blind pack.
I could keep going with this, but at $15 a figure or like $50 for the big bosses, I'm already printing SE some serious bank here.
Looks like they did have a mini figurine set at some point in the past, probably only available in Japan.
I tried collecting all the merch until I came to the realization that theres barely any of it and a lot of it is kinda ugly. So I just commission stuff from artists instead, I found a lot thru Etsy actually.

Except none of the 'ads' are intruding on your login. It is much faster to get through the XIV launcher than POL. Not even debatable for anyone who has used both.

SE merch quality has been hit or miss in my experience as well, which sucks for the price that they try to charge for some of it. Won't even go into the quality of their store/shipping provider. It's a shame cause I think those Taru figures look adorable.

Yeah the taru are some of my favorite, especially the AA taru lol. I have a bunch of pics of them on my profile and some customs. I think I have almost all the merch they've done except the Shadow Lord statue because that goes for 2,000 and its ugly so I can't justify it.

PlayOnline is complete dogshit, the fact that you don't want a clearly better alternative is nothing short of being derived from either stubborn indignation or lunacy. Don't worry though, you'll get to keep your crappy launcher cause there's basically no chance of SE ever putting down the funds necessary to separate XI's social systems from it.

It's a sluggish, antiquated piece of trash that was never as successful as they wanted it to be, and if it weren't for the fact that they tied the game's friends list and messaging to it I have no doubt they would have replaced it years ago.

The $1000 Y'shtola doll is much more affordable than the FFVI $11,000 Terra and Magitek armor statue.

lol then you have the opposite end of the isle, this guy who is ready to jump and defend XIV to the death any time its mentioned. .. It's... Creaucent.
Its only natural people who like XI probably wont like XIV, not sure why that still bothers people on a forum for XI. The xiv launcher is def better as you can get into the game very fast, but you can't deny it isn't stuffed with ads for their cash shop. Maybe its a feed from that lodestone site but every single time I open it, they have cash shop new items.
POL is another one of SE's ideas gone wrong because they abandoned it. The idea itself was pretty neat and ahead of its time, it kinda reminds me of a form of discord. They really need to get rid of it at this point though and just let us log right into the game with minimal input, DCing is a horrible experience when you have multiple characters.

You are misremembering. It was laid out in the post analogous to the one I linked above for the May 2022 update.
Everyone feel free to hold out hope for some kind of one-off announcement of content, but it doesn't look too promising to me.
Looking back at May of 2017, I actually don't see any notes in the pre-update brief or version update notes themselves about the RoE objectives and general Vanaversary stuff. Perhaps they just never announce that content.
It's just gonna be those gold bombs and it'll only be for Vol2 probably. iirc they drop a few hundred extra hallmarks
