Well, with no direct connection to the electrical current, how could somebody electrocute themselves? By not touching the mains I mean he isn't going into contact with the electrical current lighting the light.

Yeah. The version I heard was worded a little differently, but the important point is that nobody said the electrocution happened when he dips the spoon, just because he dips the spoon in the cereal.
