We have a hundred thousand variety of car. Parts are hard to find as said car gets older. Less mechanics know how to fix "your car". Obsolete parts, discontinuation etc.
But if everyone drives the same car, part warehouses are significantly smaller. Every repair for every situation is identical. Every mechanic knows exactly what to do and how to do it.
It's logically optimal. Safer for the roads, there's no threat of gigantic SUV killing driver of prius. There's no more street racing. There's no more need for multiple octanes of gasoline.
