On the gun control front, what rights are being given up with universal background checks?
I AM SO GLAD YOU ASKED!!!! I would like to add to your knowledge, which you prolly know already, why I am against UBCs, and why others should be too. I'd like to open up and state/remind that I am open to banning private sales of firearms between two parties, without FFLs.

Some UBCs can be written so badly that me handing my pistol over to my girlfriend at the shooting range, would be illegal unless I run a background check on her, and then she'd have to run one back on me when giving me back the gun. That is a terribly stupid written law. But not a major point of my opposition.

We already have a NICS. The NICS is a national background check that everyone that purchases firearms through a gun shop, has to pass. Gun Shops have to have a FFL. The FFL is the Federal Firearms Licence. Shops and people that get FFLs go through some background checks as well, to get their FFL. So really, a Universal Background Check would aim at private individual sales. Straw Purchasing, where someone with a clean record, goes to buy a gun for someone else, mostly for criminal reasons, is already illegal. I would love to make that more illegal. But to REALLY stop private sales, you would have to register every firearm. So when you stop John and he has a gun that doesn't belong to him, it's registered to Tom, Tom will also go to jail. I don't disagree with the "John AND TOM going to jail" bit, I have serious fear, and everyone should, of a National Gun Registration.

Why we should be very afraid of that, is a bit contentious. I won't say "NAZIs registered guns!" because it's not exactly true. The German government, before the full rise of the National Socialist power, gave out permits to carry guns in public, as well as a registry of who owned guns. Now I an't say that they had ill intent for this. I will give them the benefit of the doubt and say that had no malicious intent and was purely for the safety of their people. Now when the party in control switched to a very different and evil sort of power, they already had the tools in place, to know WHO had guns, and know exactly WHERE to look. So what did they do? They raided houses of people with guns, with this nice helpful database, and confiscated them. They disarmed their citizens.

We saw what happened in one example there of registering firearms lead to terrible consequences of people disarmed and left unable to fight back against the tyranny of their government. We should not be handing over that much power to the government. We now have in some states, laws stating rifles with a made up term of "assault weapon" have to be registered. Chanti you may have heard something similar to this, but first they'll go with the semi auto rifles. Then they will go for the semi auto pistols. Then they will go with the shotguns and revolvers. That is absolutely terrifying, and what's worse is Americans disarming other Americans based on misinformation and ill intent by those in leadership.

The facts show that murders by rifles are far lower than those by hand guns. These big high profile killings, while terribly tragic and horrifying, are statistically rare, unless you start fudging numbers so that theres, say 300 mass shootings a year. Far more people are killed with hand guns. Why is there more outcry for the scary rifles than what is doing more damage and death, hand guns?

All this type of gun control boils down to me, and others I know, as badly motivated actions, on the backs of tragedies. I don't know what the solution is, but I know this isn't compromise either. This is bullying gun owners. One side straight up bulling gun owners. And those supposed gun owners that want UBCs, are being led around like sheep, and it's because they don't know better. They don't know the repercussions of the actions they would send their representatives to vote on, to strip away Constitution protected rights.

I don't know what the answer is to all this terrible news the news fixates on, but I know without a doubt, UBCs and Gun confiscations ain't it chief.

Yep. So what is this a diversion from? What does the allegedly liberal press desperate not to be reporting on?
Hong Kong. Possible Paris Protests (too soon for weekend, I will check on the lines after weekend if they still continuing. They were out last week), South African Violent Riots, Boston Rioters that were arrested having their charges dropped.
All good candidates for being pushed to the back pages but I think there is something political and domestic that is being reduced to background noise.
And focusing on a Sharpied up graph, is extremely trivial.

I'm not saying it's great what Trump or his people die, but I don't care. There has been more focus on this by the media than (shuffles deck of Previous administrations scandals and draws one) ...Operation Fast and Furious.

You all may think we don't care and let Trump do as he pleases....but to be frank, we learned this from you (the left). And we shouldn't be doing this, but we are. And it's sad no one picks up on that.

The other solution would be to give everyone a weapon more powerful than a gun, that way there would be no need for guns.

Problem Solved.

Libs still reaching for this to be some kind of “inpeach blumpf” moment. When even CNN was advising that Alabama was in the crosshairs.

The first organized protest against WA's UBC law was a bunch of gun owners standing in front of our capitol passing guns back and forth. Unfortunately it was all quite legal given how our UBC law was written.

https://app.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=9.41.113

Much of your argument after that is the old slippery slope. UBCs need not automatically lead to registration although I will bet that some calling for UBCs hope it will.

I already pointed out problems with a semi auto ban.

The observation that the vast majority of firearm deaths are from handguns, not long guns, has been made by both lefties and righties. Nor does a mass killer need a 30 shot clip to wreak havoc. But numbers get headlines and them 30 - 100 shot clips help the numbers add up quickly.

30 killed in Chicago in a weekend makes headlines for less than a day. 30 killed in one mass shooting makes headlines for days. The most visible problem is always the first to be addressed.

Yea that's facts I don't like. An agency that takes orders from the WH releases an unsigned statement? Just more spin that no one believes.

Cool, because he said the hurricane was ORIGINALLY heading straight for Florida. He said we got lucky that it turned right and went up the coast. That's when he asked for the map to show it's original path.

I had a suspicion that the Left would spend all its time harping on the stupidest little things once the Russian collusion fiasco ended. Unfortunately, I was correct. #sharpiegate is the lamest "gate" in history and shouldn't have lasted more than 2 hours.

lol, Trump has spent the last 6 days tweeting about it at least twice a day. We aren't taking any blame for #Sharpiegate. He edited a weather map with a sharpie, he deserved all the ridicule he got. And then he just kept tweeting about it. This is all on him.

And the beat goes on...

NOAA disavows National Weather Service tweet that refuted Trump's claim Dorian was headed toward Alabama

Quote:
(CNN)The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Friday disavowed a tweet from the National Weather Service's Birmingham, Alabama, office that had contradicted President Donald Trump's false assertion that Hurricane Dorian was likely to hit the state....

Dan Sobien, president of the National Weather Service Employees Organization, lambasted NOAA's characterization of events and defended the agency's employees.

"Let me assure you the hard working employees of the NWS had nothing to do with the utterly disgusting and disingenuous tweet sent out by NOAA management tonight #NOAA," he tweeted Friday....

The sharpie graph came from the conversation that I was referring to. His spaghetti graph and other tweets were presented to defend his comment about Alabama. There were two different conversations. Don't use the sharpie graph in the conversation with Alabama then.

And then there were three ...

Sanford says he is launching primary challenge against Trump

Quote:
Washington (CNN)Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford will launch a longshot primary challenge for the 2020 Republican nomination, he announced Sunday, giving President Donald Trump another Republican challenger as he runs for reelection.

"I had planned to announce that back home this week. We had a hurricane come visit us on the coast of South Carolina so that sort of disrupted plans on that front," Sanford said in an interview on "Fox News Sunday." "But I am here to tell you now, that I am going to get in."

When asked why he was running, he said because "I think we need to have a conversation on what it means to be a Republican," adding that he thinks the Republican Party has lost its way on "a couple different fronts."...
