Changing jobs is necessary for the subjob system. The original devs have gone on record saying that they never expected people to level multiple jobs to 75 and use them.

Do you have a source for this
It was something like 15 years ago, so not offhand. If there was a database of interviews somewhere it should be in there, I think it was in a fairly prominent one.

idk man sounds like either a misremembering on your part or a dogshit translation on the mystery interviewer, because there is practically no way in my mind that I see SE's original design for the game as creating the entire job change system merely as a side effect of allowing us to have sub jobs. The very concept of "Advanced Jobs" immediately discredits the thought. There's just no way that I can believe they originally intended for all of their players to be good boys and girls and to ignore the fact that you can change your main job.

I easily can. The FFXI Devs (more so around the earlier release years, but still more recent too) have had their heads stuck in the sand and ignorant to what the player base wants or needs to an incredible degree over the lifetime of FFXI.

I'm very certain of this statement.

Certain or not, it's not relevant today. The game has changed in 15 years.

This particular topic (the one on the interview, not the inventory one) is about what the devs originally designed FFXI's systems around, so it is relevant to that topic.

How is what they intended for the game 15 years ago relevant to how it is today when it's not even the same game as it was back then?

It's not, but that topic wasn't about what was relevant today.

There were two separate conversations going on; one about inventory and today's FFXI, and one about FFXI's original vision by the devs.

I'm not concerned about what they intended back when level cap was 75. Today, relevancy in gear is in the eyes of the person getting it. That's where I stand. I don't speak for anyone else.

When talking about whether there are concrete inventory issues and what the source of them is, there has to be a standardized definition for what is necessary to progress with the topic. Otherwise, you could get someone who says there's no inventory issues because nothing is needed and someone who says there'd be inventory issues even with 10,000 slots because they want to collect everything.

For there to be discussion, there has to be an agreed-upon baseline, and "necessary to complete all challenges that your job is suited for" is as close to a concrete one as we can define.

I don't think there is anything you couldn't realistically do with 5/5 odyssey set and never change a single piece accessories either. Even roll+ song+ etc are merely speed enhancers.
How you clearing V20s with a party of 6 like that?

He isn't, just pulling it out of his *** I guess. This is what I was saying earlier. I guess if your definition of min/max is literally NQ vs HQ, 1 STR (which these days it isn't such small increases) or some equip that only works during full moon (not many items left like this that people still use.)

Lakshmi.Buukki said: »
Define min/maxing. Are we talking about having sets for different occasions (I just consider this normal gameplay) or obsessing over the absolute highest/BIS stats/gear per slot. The game has never required the latter level of "min/maxing" to complete content, if that is what people refer to when they use that phrase.

My idea of min/maxing was a BRD with the best instruments and other jobs with similar min/maxing(Idris geo) Those are almost requirements these days on the high end. Capped DT sets or MEVA builds etc.

Almost being that you can clear the content if someone else is min/maxing and carrying you, but if all 6 people aren't min/maxing then I don't see the content being cleared. For some reason people like to downplay the games difficulty but lets be honest, 6 people full timing gear sets you aren't clearing that content reliably.

SE seems to have balanced most higher end content around this, an Ongo at higher difficulty with a BLM that doesn't min/max their sets? No bonuses to abilities via gear? During the beginnings of Escha where you used manaburn strats? Master trials? There were plenty of times when it was basically required to reliably clear things to have some people doing that.

It might be a semantics debate on the term, but to me min/maxing isn't just simply situational gear or minor stat increases. It's entire gearsets tweaked for maximum potential, which requires different gears that take a lot of inventory space. So its not just 1 str here and there, its now whole gearsets devoted to a certain task like magic bursts or skillchain damage or subtle blow etc.

I guess by trying to make all the REMA i'm doing it wrong, filling up my inventory with useless crap :(

Serious note, I see in a lot of premade lua lots of different acc sets for situational stuff or multiple hybrid sets etc. That's what I consider min/maxing. When you make 10 ambu capes and dm aug 4 herc legs for different situations. Probably over exaggerating that but you get the point.

I play tank, geo, range dps, light melee, heavy melee, smn. And of those light and heavy melee I like to mix it up sometimes play war or sam or maybe blu or mnk. I have optimised my wardrobes as much as i can and the best i can do is run, blu, rng and cross over accessories/armor for melee jobs. All smn and geo is in case etc. and the dps im currently playing is in inventory. So frustrating when I have to swap loads of things about. So more wardrobes is a win for me.

I guess my definition of min/max was different. I always thought it was trying to get the maximum efficiency on a job/piece of gear from a minimal increase, which may or may not necessarily translate to a real-world improvement. i.e. Making a counter+ set on MNK or SAM for the rare occasions where you need to negate damage vs just taking reduced damage with higher dps set.

I feel like making REMA weapons and having good stats across all slots is sufficient for everything in FFXI, but not necessarily minmaxing. Making a GEO neck is minmaxing IMO, as the neck is merely a luopan convenience, and I have not bought/made one at all and have cleared the highest content in the game without ever having one. The item to me simply isn't needed at all for the job, and it's merely a side improvement. Others may differ.

The problem with acknowledging you don't want to minmax is the judgement that comes with downgrading in certain areas and admitting it. And then the double standard from people. People only ever want to see BIS when you talk gear, even when it's not even close to being needed. Nobody ever says "Here's a bare minimum set you need on RDM you need to enfeeble Gaol V20 adds". They see everyone else post their sets online for how they got something done, and then demand that same standard in when they decide to form for it. And then you get shouts for Odysey Gaol Arebati 20 asking for a Yag WHM, where Yag literally adds nothing for that fight. People don't even understand the standards they are asking for anymore. It gets watered down and ends up being a ridiculous and meaningless standard that doesn't always translate to performance increase.

My Geo is literally for zerg fights where you need idris bubbles for quick kills. So no enfeeb set, barebones refresh/idle set and basic indi+ gear. So can't bring it to ambu months where geo has to silence etc mobs. And that's because getting an enfeeb set would set me back another 10 slots and thats a headache i dont want haha i dont play any other mages. So I get what you mean Buukki

You are right and I'm not sure how common it is, exactly. I know for a while, there were some jagoffs who had the mindset of "if you don't glow, you don't go" even though there are some jobs that you don't even need AG... such as Yagrush, Idris, tank weapons...

These are just people who do not understand game mechanics and should be ignored... as rude as that may sound. They're the types who see something expensive and buy it because it's expensive, not because they understand why.

We don't shout on our server for anything like that, but I've always understood "need blah blah with this rema" just to be a way to ensure the person has put forth some effort into the job. If you have a field of 100 people wanting in, why not be picky and narrow it down a bit. Or for things like Idris, why struggle when you can make it that much easier on everyone just by being choosy with who you take.

Anyone who is a great player but without said rema is bound to have a good reputation and be in a linkshell where they don't need to rely on shout *** anyway

This is true and another incentive for people to farm several extra pieces to push them to the limit. It may not be "necessary" as some may see it but as you said, when there is a whole bunch of people to pick from for X job, odds are, the guy who is the most geared will get picked as they will most likely be able to adapt to given situations.

So they are probably going to boost the master level cap by 5, 10, or 20.

I see:
M.Level 25: Nothing interesting to me
M.Level 30: Auspice from /WHM, another 3% WSD from /DRG
M.Level 40: Shellra 3 from /WHM

What did I miss?

I think that (without looking into it) /smn can't get past tier 1 (316) skill, so nothing of much value, and the pet will (usually) die on any aoe, but there's potential I suppose.

12% crit or 12% da if a whm/smn I guess or you have a rollcor/afkbard

I wouldn't be surprised if favor was classified as a stance like Composure and it gets explicitly restricted to smn main only.

I'm sure it varies from server to server. I've seen screenshots of it happening on Asura but I cannot say I've seen it happen on Levi (yet).

People requiring appropriately geared players is one thing, requiring people to be far over-geared is idiotic. I will say, this happens a lot more in WoW than any other MMO I've played.

"LFM *trivial content*, must be geared to my standards" ... while being in very entry level gear.

I know with my groups when we need a DD for Ody farms, we usually shout DD multi weapon types required.
Because I don't care if your a shining one/savage war, as long as you know when to swap the dang weapon over. I can't stand seeing a DD pound his head into a slashing resist mob hitting 14k Savages for the next 3 minutes.

This week's We are Vana'diel interview starts a series with colossal waste of funding Tetsuya Nomura... yay? First part is really light and not relevant to XI.
