lets not forget the richter scale is logarithmic a 6.9 earthquake is 1/40 the strength of a 7.3 (i think)

There are lots of little magnitude 3's and such happening all the time, just they are so weak that we never really recorded them before. Until recently when we deployed these large sophisticated networks of sensors to better detect and predict Earthquakes. that doesn't look right, probably closer to a 1/15th
Difference in magnitude is 2.51 i.e 7.3 is 2.511 times bigger than a 6.9 and is 3.981 times stronger.
Having been through many growing up in So.Cal with 6.7 being the largest experienced; a 6.9-7.3 would give many of you nightmares. Especially if you never been in an earthquake in before. Anything over 6.0 is going to be scary and cause quite a bit of damage. Under that it depends on how far someone is from the epicenter.
