That should be the topic for the next big debate. That would definitely stir up some opinions.

I've noticed over the years, people in or who have been in the military get very angry when someone doesn't like the state of the country and/or especially what our troops are doing.

The idea that men and women are fighting / dying to protect our freedom is not entirely true. Yes that is the goal of the military, but can you say every conflict is a struggle for our freedom?

During wars like the Revolutionary War, WWI & WII, absolutely. But it's all relative to the current administration policies and what is actually threatening our country.

Terrorism for example doesn't come from one country, so it's hard to justify where and what our troops do.

I'll stop here, but this should be the next big debate topic.

This shows a common misconception. Not everyone in the military is overseas fighting, most ppl in the military are on the mainland. Even with as long as this war has gone on there are many individuals that have never been in a combat zone at all even after almost 20 years in service.

There are more ways of defending the country than taking out terrorists (that task is actually impossible since terrorism is more of an idea than an organization). You can serve by maintaining the safety and security in peacekeeping manners too.

The war on terrorism isn't against every single one in the world, it's against specific groups. Preventing the other terrorists is just part of keeping potential victims safe. I'm not justifying everything we do/have done, but I'd rather fight to protect another 9/11 from happening than just let the extremists attack again.

Veterans and those still in get pissed b/c everyone seems to think they automatically know everything about the government. Boundsoul is a prime example, he thinks our country sucks b/c his life isn't perfect.

People in the military get stereotyped as warmongers by those that don't actually know them. Just b/c you're trained with a weapon and might have one in your possession at times doesn't mean you've shot anyone with it.

Last post then I'm done with this thread. You claim I don't understand things without even knowing me, but whatever. There is one thing I don't understand. If we're all so free and that freedom is so great, then why is it that we have to vote so some citizens can have the same rights permitted to all others without question?

You should get your head out of paperback fantasies. You probably are one of those that think we should turn to a communism type government where everyone is 100% equal. History has proven that what is in idea the best systems are instead the worst.

As it stands democratic based governments maintain order while giving citizens the most freedom possible than any other system. This is the real world, expecting everything to be the way you want it wouldn't work. It may be one of the worst sounding in idea/on paper but it's application in the real world works.

If you're after every single person voting you don't have any knowledge of history then. The Greeks tried it in Athens(only certain men were even permitted to vote) and it caused far too many problems and took forever to resolve the many issues that was presented to them. They only had a few thousand too, we have millions, not sure how anyone would expect an efficient way to gather everyone's vote.

If you hate this country so much b/c it's 'flawed' (pretty silly you would even expect any country not to be) where would you go that's better? I'd suggest going to China or somewhere and living so you can really have a reason to complain about restrictions on rights.

I don't need to know you at all to see your lack of understanding and ignorance. Yeah things aren't perfect, but that's why you have to suck it up and be responsible for your own outcome in life.

On topic though, it's only fair if homosexuals receive the same legal rights as heterosexuals. To me it depends on your definition of the term 'marriage' to determine if they should be allowed to use the title. Some individuals find it to be a religious term, but then it would have to be further defined to which denominations the term is granted to. If any religion supported same-sex marriage then it would be ethically acceptable to use the term.

So basically, I think the real debate should be on what the definition of marriage is. I don't believe same-sex couples should be denied any legal rights that traditional couples have.

yes, simply because they deserve to be as miserable as straight married couples.

democracy
1.At first its great and prosperity is born
2.As time goes on the citizens become relaxed and rely on democracy to solve their problems.. they become complacent and fail to take out their trash.
3.The rules created by democracy tighten
4.The citizens get rats because they fail to leave their trash for the government to take.
5.The rules become tighter and the government kill their rats.

What I said is very sketchy but it has many ways to view and I didnt say it right b/c I can't remember. The point is, democracy is great, but in time it will fail like all governments. Yes America is great I agree but wake up where what 200 years old? Enjoy your freedom while it lasts. Your freedom to even host debates such as these. Maybe you wont feel the full effect in this life time but a few generations you better believe it.

Our government is far from perfect I'd agree. President Obama has been trying to give the government more control to attempt to fix economic problems. Changes are so small that they are hard to tell, we have to be careful to not allow ourselves to become socialists (socialism is really more of an economic term like capitalism and not an actual government style iirc).

I can read your minds, but more importantly, gay guys are too *** flamboyant for their own good. If they get their energy sapped out of them like how a wife does to her husband, then they would come back to Earth, and maybe land on a giant ***.

For the most part it appears that people are in favour of same-sex marriages but one wonders if that's due to our demographic of forum posters or because this is the internet, the ones who do have differing opinions don't want to say anything for fear of retribution. Maybe I need a topic that people are more 50/50 about.

Although in my mind Kungfu won the debate hands down.

~~~~~~~~
Again I just want to remind people to make sure they don't make personal attacks at people. There was some in there and it's not called for.
I'm taking PM's on the next topic, which should be up by tomorrow. I realise there may have been suggestions in this thread about other topics but I will only be accepting PM's.
