You'll want to download a program for something like that, unless there is a plugin I don't know about.

Something like http://www.fraps.com/ will let you see the FPS for a certain window.

Good to know, but yea Kawar, if you want to know FPS for anything that doesn't have FPS display support, my post above is an option.

There might be other options that are better, I just don't know of them. If anyone else knows of something feel free to post instead of trolling :)

I believe so, something about recasts having something to do with FPS. No idea how that is relevant.

I was using an fps unlocker mod that let you run ffxi at 60fps. honestly the change was pretty amazing, almost unsettling at how much of an improvement it was lol.

/unlimited would allow the game to be played at 60fps, but it also revealed a lot of the animations are locked at 30fps.

oh thats nice didn't know that as i haven't been playing the game for years now. i just stumble in on the forum once in a while when i get bored or nostalgic about the game.

Sorta. It's max frame rate is 30FPS (more like 29.4 in practice) but it has like 3 different sampling points that determine how many frames a particular animation will use. That's why they capped framerates while fishing, because if you're above 15FPS, the game will use 30 frames for the animation, meaning at 16FPS, you're taking almost twice as long as intended for each animation. So framerate and animations are pretty variable, uncapping it reveals a lot of that volatility.

An interesting side-note is that FFXI doesn't utilize GPU's very well if at all, and even a dedicated gaming rig will get reduced frame rates in a lot of cases. I can play most modern games at well over 100FPS if they're uncapped, some way higher than that even, and FFXI will still dip below 30FPS quite often.
