There were indications that S-E was something developing mobile for FFXI even before SoA to try to cash in. The bleed probably just gave them more ammo to get it done sooner.

But the thing is, profitability isn't always enough. Sometimes a product just doesn't meet the "corporate vision" or an exec has a pet project he thinks is a better use of resources.

I'm sure they actually are still making a profit even with the dwindling server pops, but it's just not enough to justify continued support of the game when they feel they could do better elsewhere.

I can't really disagree with that assessment, but I do heartily disagree with their chosen direction. This mobile MMO venture will flop harder than XIV 1.0. The only saving grace is, it won't be as huge an investment as XIV was. It will burn them though, and I can't say I'll have much sympathy for them when it does.

XI has always been a rather small playerbase MMO that thrived because that base was batshit hardcore. When the game eased up and changed what kept people playing the first place, the core was broken and you have what exists now.

XI never had a chance to pickup softcore subs because this game approached EVE levels of being inaccessible to newbies. The combination of breaking the LS dynamic coupled with everything being easy/trivial/ilvl type situations ended it for XI. I'd also throw in some major missteps on SEs fault *coughFFXIVcough*

SE wouldn't be ending updates if they didn't see huge losses at present or in the future. Better to let subs bleed out until the eventual one server / plug pulled scenario. Mobile games are big in JP so starting the game 'anew' sounds better than dragging a decaying corpse.

That's a joke petition right? It's at 182 signatures right now, about on par with what I'd expect...but the worst part:

They have their goal set at 200 signatures.

So someone sat down and went "How many people do you think SE will need to hear are in support of this idea to go ahead with it?" And came up with 200.

200k would be a low # for what they want.

When I signed, the goal was 100 signatures. Probably goes up for every 100 signatures.

Change.org is a joke. But I didn't want to be that guy.

FFXI isn't going anywhere, they simply said they're going to be done making new content. Servers aren't going anywhere (yet).

SE has developed this game into the ground. Get the devs away from it.

I'm going to say its a bit of both.

They made a game that was never been done before (cross platform/shared server mmo etc.) and kept it going for quite a long time and continuously developed it. Some game design decisions were iffy but if you step back and take a look at what the game offers, its pretty awesome.
One of the few mmo's that offers long term goals, keeps old gear relevant (to an extent), has fairly embedded social interaction which a lot of other games/mmo's seem to lack. etc.

I blame the playerbase too because of how a lot of gamers are these days. Wanting instant gratification, ez mode challenges etc.

So there's a lot of bitching and moaning on Guildwork about how FFXI is now making SE a loss but does anyone actually know the figures for FFXI, is it actually making a loss?

No point me asking guildwork as there's a lot of nonsense being posted.
