On the release of Warlords of Draenor their subs increased by more than 10x the amount of active FFXI accounts total. Partially because they opened up the level 90 character boost upgrade/etc. that let you get your feet wet on current content before the expac dropped.

People can talk down about Blizzard all they want, but even though they may not be perfect, they've got a much better handle on things than SE.

The idea they're going to make a huge drastic change to a 10 year old game to attract new players... to a game that is tough on new players...not going to happen.

I used to play XI with a former WoW GM before Blizzard apparently started handling GMs themselves rather than outsourcing to agencies or something. He was a cool guy. We both wanted to in-game marry the same woman...her husband just kinda shook his head at us both. lol

One of my part-time LS mates is also a Blizzard employee. She's pretty awesome. She's hooked me up with a lot of free goodies (character boosts, faction changes, etc.). I actually just wish she had more time to play either game.

I brought up recent trademarks over on BG and "Masters of the Mask" was found to be registered last October. Could be Dragon Quest related or an expansion.

I'm not sure why people are even for an expansion at this point... I'd be happy if there were never another FFXI expansion, as I'd much rather see well thought out and frequent content updates that give more options for play (as they've been doing the last couple years, and doing it really well).

Currently FFXI is in a really good place, just about everyone can participate easily in at least 'one' of the 119 gearing events, and a good share of them are quite fun.

To rebuild this playing field as well as they've done with the current form of SoAdoulin would take a miracle, and quite frankly I don't believe they'd even have the manpower to make it. It'd be a shame to watch them trash this content because someone thought ilvl 130~ itemization was more important than overall game design.

If I were to ask for one thing, it'd be more cp-friendly zones. Gringing CP in the same-old-zones or "in cave's only" is just mind-numbing, so while I doubt they'd just toss us new free zones to play in, as someone who has like a billion more job points to harvest, I'd certainly welcome it with open arms.

Any kind of shut down/end of life announcement probably would be done via dumped out press release and not a scheduled live stream.

You respect SE too much...having a live stream to ruin hope and dreams of players is fitting !

I don't disagree new land-masses and new lore-npc-interaction would be nice, but don't see why this would require an expansion... Just introduce a new land-mass every quarter of next year as part of what we pay for with our subscription.

The mindset of expansion design in MMO's is almost always the same now: "Disgregard everything you've come to know and enjoy over the last few years, we might go back and fix it later to be playable again, but we also might not (probably not and if we do it's at our own pace and in the order we want to do it), for the time being though, buy our new stuff so you can have access to the best gear, because if you don't, you'll never catch up to everyone who did".

While 'lore' would be cool, I think it doesn't require an entire expansion, and I think it's dangerous ground to tread on such a shaky platform as FFXI. monthly fees should be MORE than enough to introduce land-masses and story, just trickle that ***in slowly and we'll sip it up bit by bit.

Frankly I'd welcome an end-of-game announcement, let it die a still marginally respectable death while it still has a dwindling-but-loyal fanbase.

But I don't see that happening. And F2P would basically just be a veiled death-of-game announcement anyhow, as the only reason they have to keep it going is because it's steady income for extremely minimal overhead.

A band aid is basically everything SE has done to keep this game going. Oh hey let's put a band aid on this enormous lack of content and reason to play !

Yes, which is why I don't want an expansion now (or ever again) in FFXI. I don't feel an entire expansion-scale change could be handled appropriately with what they have available for manpower.

It's my opinion that they've done a really good job 'fixing' stuff the last few years, even though it's slow-and-steady, they have carved FFXI into a really great place right now. Personally I don't think 'the dev team' gets enough credit for what's been accomplished over the last few years; if it's spaghetti-coded as much as they seem to imply, we've seen one hell of an accomplishment for a small team.
