Typed in my zip. Grand total of cable broadband providers: 1 Yet, did not link at least the city you are in to prove this statement.....
Also, I noticed that you limited your number to one type (cable). I guess when you can't say otherwise, limit the results down to prove your point....
Twc and Verizon available in my area, but Verizon doesn't service my neighborhood, which is an HOA full of 2000+ sq/ft, less than a decade old custom houses within blocks of their central office.
So yes, only one provider available. Does your HOA state that you have to use TWC and not any other options available to you? In other words, do you have to use cable internet only, and not wireless?
We use both, I only mentioned the HOA because the neighborhood was built at one time by one developer, and all the relevant infrastructure is in place. Verizon says they don't have equipment in our area, which is wrong, they just don't want to pay for the right to use it because they let someone else pay to lay it.

oh wow after reading through everything going on, I happily support it if it means we'll be getting what we pay for.

Boy I dunno who to pull for in this fight. It's like choosing between ISIS and Al Qaeda. Big monopolistic corporations? Not a fan of those. Big monolithic government? Not a fan of that either, and really it was a combination of both of them that got us into this mess.
I don't trust any of them. I don't trust the companies to care about pleasing the customer since there is no real competition, and I don't trust the government not to continually expand whatever power it gives itself despite who the voters elect.

Yes, I'd love to pay for an inferior product just to help out the little guy. Cable is all I want and mobile service is for my phone. So, yeah, 1 choice.

Mobile LTE networks are significantly different in nature and policy from general home broadband connections.
Mobile data plans more often than not are not only significantly inflated in price, but also have extremely short bandwidth caps and throttling/coverage issues. Honestly they're nothing alike so throwing mobile carriers with ISPs in the same bucket is silly.

Not to even mention the latency they have and dependence on signal quality.

ISP and phone companies do not have a monopoly, as there are way too many choices to choose from. If you are going to base your decision on one type of carrier, then there's no helping you as you choose that carrier based on what they provide.
But there are multiple competitors for ISPs out there. Just because there's only one that supplies a majority of the consumers there doesn't mean it supplies all of them...
This is total *** and you're glossing over a lot of problems. First and the biggest issue is that the various providers carve up areas and often stay out of each other's areas. TWC and Comcast for example. They are even on the record saying they "don't compete" well there's a good reason for that. They've made deals to not step on each other's feet and because of that, they can jack up the price because they don't have to worry about too many customers jumping ship since so many areas have limited providers.
I'm sure you're aware of what happened in Austin with Google Fiber right? So why was it before Google came in, internet rates were similar to other cities in Texas? Why do they suddenly offer gigabit for a good price the second Google walks in? Competition that's why. They didn't have any real competition before so they never needed to upgrade speeds nor lower prices. San Antonio is a possible Google Fiber city as well. I'd bet my entire paycheck that the moment they are there that the prices will drop and suddenly gigabit will be magically available.
These businesses are here for one reason and only one reason. To make an obscene amount of money. Stockholders don't want them wasting money unnecessarily upgrading connections or lowering costs but when they are forced to by competition they jump. But they have used a lot of money trying their best to get around regulations and avoid competition.

It's funny, the threat of Google Fiber's presence and demand throughout major metropolitan areas is what triggered the sudden influx of many ISPs suddenly doubling their downstream speeds for free. For many moons they were giving you ***service for the highest premium without so much as a peep, simply because they could get away with it.

Yep those are the only 2 ISP in the entire country...
Actually, for many or most Americans, they are, good catch.

And I should probably add that just because there are some other options in some certain parts does not mean they still do not benefit from the effects of a near monopoly, if not in some parts a complete one.

You've never left the US, have you? Travel to East Asia or Europe and look at how many telecoms they have, the prices they charge, and the speed they provide. Unless you live in one of the few markets that has a fiber optic network, US speeds are pitiful.
I can literally pay for the most expensive broadband option in my city, which is something ridiculous like $150/month, and still download data faster on my cell phone. That's because there's no meaningful competition in the telecom industry and the major players have cooperated to keep it that way.
Comcast throttling Netflix was just the first step. Have no doubt it would have gone further.
There's the imaginary problem, and you're belief that this will make MORE competition is just, wow....
As has been said before, regulation makes competition more difficult. It raises the cost to get in the game. This will encourage more cronyism, not less. Wait till all these rules come out and the administration starts handing out waivers and exemptions to this company over that one.
"Thanks for all those campaign contributions comcast, here's your waiver to all the new rules that were created by an entirely non elected body of government hacks."

Comcast is evil cause they provided me with internet with very little problems for over three years !
I wish I could switch to a less reliable ISP but sadly it's the only option.

It's silly of me to look to what has happened in the past in exactly this kind of situation and draw conclusions from that. Better to pull on the tin foil and wank myself into retardation.

If we are going to reach page 9 we need something controversial. This is too bland.
Your average joesixpack doesn't care about this.

hows this to keep this going: thank your local big government proponents (see RINOs and democrats) for this. our grand kids will look back at the time in which the internet wasn't censored and think "wow, that would have been cool to be able to say anything you like" likely on about the same bandwidth for 5x the price

A couple of questions come to mind for those who haven't been paying attention to this effort to regulate the internet.
What exactly is "Net Neutrality" and how will it affect our use of the internet on a personal and business level?
This was an interesting read to say the least.

Here's a simplistic video regarding "Net Neutrality".
