UK bill to allow genetic modifications of embryos.
I just don't see a realistic downside.
But I'm in favor of a lot of reproductive restrictions and requirements that most people aren't, soooo... I don't have a problem with this... necessarily. There are practical applications for mothers with mitochondrial defects. Like almost any useful science, though, it's only a matter of time before someone manages to do something stupid with it.

So having women with three breasts is out of the question ?
fonewear said: » Can we genetically modify SE to be a competent company ? Let's not move this thread into the territory of science fiction, Fone. There are certain things that science simply cannot do. fonewear said: » Can we genetically modify SE to be a competent company ? fonewear said: » So having women with three breasts is out of the question ? It's not out of the question. But technically, neither is having a man with three breasts. Offline

Scientists have been playing or wanting to play God for a long time.

But what if we could detect that and correct it prior to birth? Is that really a bad thing? Im concerned about artificial life and the potential for that life to far surpass organic life or outright get out of human control. I'm not suggesting Terminator or any of the post-apocalyptic scenarios often thrown around media but we've got a population of surplus humans and tossing superior mechanical life into that opens the field to far more terrifying scenarios than curing people of diseases. Unless you subscribe to the idea that we'll be uploading brains within a 150 years and humanity is destined to shed its organic trappings to live in technoorganic bliss. Offline

Before we get to AI ruining society can we get high speed internet outside of the major cities ?
Upload a brain I can't even download porn at a reasonable rate ! Also, I think I read that the mitochondrial DNA doesn't affect things like appearance and personality, so it's not like we're going to have creepy-looking hybrid babies. The only exception to that is when they put mitochondrial DNA from a horse into a human embryo several decades back. Luckily, scientists learned from their mistake and we will only ever have one Sarah Jessica Parker.

She is single guys just fyi (no idea but she could be single)
She is married to something called Matthew Broderick fonewear said: » She is single guys just fyi (no idea but she could be single) Dang it, Fone. That was supposed to be a secret. The Brony fanbase must never find out. fonewear said: » Before we get to AI ruining society can we get high speed internet outside of the major cities ? We don't even have PornHub or XHamster safely on our shores. fonewear said: » She is single guys just fyi (no idea but she could be single) She is married to something called Matthew Broderick Bueller! Plus, we have such far out movie posters. FTFY Bahamut.Ravael said: » Or the main character in Glory. While I do enjoy the bio-mechanical fantasies you're spitting out with regard to eugenics, they don't really apply to the topic at hand. To bring it back to the topic, we're talking about a science that will have to be perfect given how the most minute of alterations will potentially have dramatic effects. The phrase breaking eggs to make an omelet comes to mind...like millions of eggs. I'm totally fine with being uploaded into a superior mechanical body. I'll finally be able to live out my dream of being a sub-boss for four young teenage protagonists to do battle against.

All GMO fetuses should be clearly labeled so that people don't eat them without knowing.
