I was planning to visit a friend on a different server for a bit so I checked out the World Pass system on ffxiwiki, but says something about newly created characters. Would it be possible to transfer an existing character over for a week?
I know about the world transfer service, just wondered if I could hop over to a different server for a week with the gold world pass system?
You need create a new character
The gold pass was created to incentivize recruitment of new players. It is not meant for transfers but rather for players starting new. It offers a number of different rewards most of which aren't useful anymore.

The gold world pass debuted back in the days you couldn't pick a server when you started. So you'd have to have someone buy you a world pass. Although when I started my Mage character I got her a gold world pass which I never collected on now that I think about it
