Lifted from Horus? Yeah, good luck proving that.

Please this isn't even difficult.

This is like theology 101 for the objective.

That would make sense if you realize Jesus was just a creation of myth, then yeah I could see why everyone would be pissed off at a bigger metaphorical penis over a real one.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historicity_of_Jesus#Existence

"Virtually all modern scholars of antiquity agree that Jesus existed, and most biblical scholars and classical historians see the theories of his non-existence as effectively refuted."

If you want to debate his divinity, that's cool. It's way harder to make a case that he didn't exist though.

I don't have to "tell myself" anything. It's highly likely that I've researched this more than almost everyone in here, as shown by the stupid claims you guys make.

You're right. I'm largely being argumentative now for the sake of it and worded myself poorly.

I've stated in the past and stand by my statement that while the man likely existed and it's even possible the things attributed to him are things he said, the concept of divinity is...nonsense.

Divinity or not, the takeaway from the story of Jesus (as we get it) essentially can be transposed on anyone from Edward Snowden to Martin Luther King.

It doesn't need magic or supernatural elements to be relevant. It never did.

A fair point, but in the absence of physical evidence, circumstantial evidence does carry some weight, especially if it's scaled against nothing.

Personally, I've always believed religions (All) are later anachronisms of the pre-literate world, which is why you have a lot of common elements between them, dragged through the mud of tribal politics for a few thousand years, then finally written down.

Sort of like the tales of Dragons in history. They're not actually lies, they're the best observational accounts from people with no concept of Deep Time. If you saw a giant Tyrannosaur fossil uncovered by erosion, with only a perspective of time not compatible with the geologic record, it only takes one enterprising individual to walk up and say "Oh yeah, I killed him a week ago" and suddenly a Hero is born.

I don't disagree.

But a good deal of modern Christians in this country don't have a single *** thing to do with what Jesus supposedly taught, let alone do they actually appear to believe in or practice it.

That's why I've come to ignore what people say and put emphasis on what people do.

Claiming to be religious is often a huge red flag for me as having to say it means odds are you aren't living it or are fishing for a response from me. Same goes for the militant atheist who chomps at the bit to argue about everything.

No one cares if you're Christian, Buddhist, Muslim or Hindu. Are you a decent person? Are you a decent... person??

What utterly false facts are being thrown around? That there are similarities between Jesus and other myths? That's not false...

That wasn't the claim. The claim was that the story of Jesus was plagiarized from Horus, which is of course unproven.

This isn't really unsubstantiated though, it's not not a standard of proof you're willing to accept.

I find that if you take Occam's Razor to the issue, it holds up pretty well.

I'm a statistician. Occam's Razor isn't good enough. I don't hide behind a blanket of absolute proof, because I acknowledge that I have opinions that are based on things I don't fully understand. I do, however, argue with anyone who claims they have proof when they clearly don't.

One of the biggest red flags in all religions are the distinct lack of scale regarding the entire globe, namely the Americas.

So the world flooded at some point in time, all these important battles went down, chosen people were picked yet none of these religions bothered to mention entire civilizations of people on unknown continents until a trade dispute between empires introduced these people to the world through mass enslavement and death?

Ok.

It actually lends you zero credence if you take a step back and unfuck yourself. I only said that the theory holds up to the Occam's Razor, much like the Heliocentric model, or are you going to claim to be an astrophysicist now and say that's not good enough too?
