Worked for Gandhi! What if your meditating requires that you eat cheeseburgers though ! Quote: When Karina Macias was elected mayor of Huntington Park, a small city in Los Angeles County, she noticed that many of its commissions were no longer active. The reason: Lack of interest. So the Huntington Park City Council put out a call for new applicants. This time, they told residents in the city with a majority Latino population that anyone could apply — regardless of immigration status. On Monday, two immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally were appointed to serve on city commissions. "They bring a lot to the table," said Macias, who was elected mayor two years ago. "And it really empowers, or at least gives a voice, for those undocumented in the community." The appointments are believed to be among the first in the nation in which an immigrant without legal status in the U.S. has been appointed to serve in a government position. People who are in the country illegally cannot vote or seek elected office. In accordance with the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act, U.S. employers are prohibited from hiring anyone they know is not authorized to work in the country. City leaders said their appointments are permitted because both new commissioners have agreed to serve as volunteers without pay. Nevertheless, the appointments struck a controversial note. fonewear said: » What if your meditating requires that you eat cheeseburgers though Then you've got such an unhealthy relationship with food that it qualifies as "pathological" and you need both a psychiatrist and a physician. Or at least a really good rehab counselor. Phoenix.Amandarius

Ragnarok.Nausi said: » Americans are indeed second class citizens in their own country. Please qualify this. Because it's an instance of immigrants - "legal" or otherwise - willing and able to work and do work that "citizens" aren't willing to step up and do. And just like every other ***job immigrants take that no one else was willing to do, after the fact someone is there crying: Sounds like these "illegals" have more traditional American work ethic and civic duty than the "rightful citizens." Who is treating anyone as a second class citizen? Shiva.Nikolce said: » Ragnarok.Nausi said: » Hillarys lead down to 6 in NH. Just as the investigation into her email server begins. Oh no. Hillary might lose to an actual Democrat with principles. I'd rather see Sanders lose the general election than Hillary take it all. At least then it would be a sign that voting Democrats have their ***together, at least, even if the collective country doesn't. An illegal immigrant as president as long as they don't get paid. I like the sound of that. Should do it for all of congress too.

While I'm not a fan of just opening up the borders carte blanche, "illegal" vs. "legal" immigrants is often little more than a semantics argument when it comes to them living in, working in, and supporting communities. I'd like to see fewer illegal immigrants by way of acknowledging that these people are here working and earning and in many cases paying taxes already. Yes there's the issue of "appropriate channels," but again...given some of them are paying taxes anyway, it's really just a "jumping through hoops" issue. The idea that immigrants holding office is offputting to some people is pretty antithetical to both our nation's founding ideals and their own family backgrounds. Immigration is "broke" by design, not because they can't do it. How else are you going to get cheap labor?
