what, PETA?

Given our evolutionary history, we're all part of a monkey superiority movement as a race simply by existing.

but it's damn well known calling anyone dark a monkey is about as subtle as getting a *** from a wolverine.
But it's perfectly ok, according to you, to call anyone who's not dark a monkey.

The only thing I said was don't be surprised if someone dark skinned thinks you're going in a racial direction with the insult. It's a slur among dark skinned people.

Either way it's an insult.

It's no different from calling someone white a hillbilly, redneck or any other creative term for having intercourse with one's sister. It's a racially loaded term.

For context: I have a gay friend and I drop the f-bomb with him all the time without repercussion. Because we're cool with that. Would I go around calling random gay people the f-bomb? Naw.

Clearly you have no experience with the poor whites of Appalacia.

Hillbillies copulate with their sibblings.

Rednecks just get handsy with their cousins at reunions where there's been one too many cases of Busch Light cracked open.

Why can't it just be considered an insult only and not have any racial overtones associated with it at all?

You know, treating everyone the same. Crazy idea, yeah, but it's one that can start eliminating the whole concept of racism....

Eh, I really do want in on this discussion.

all right. so monkey is a derogatory term for blacks, it's used mostly by sicilians in their... organizations of...family run...small businesses... whose legal... standing... is sometimes questioned... /rubs side of nose

so if you drew anyone as a monkey it would probably be considered racist.

monkey also indicates a the person is a rung down the evolutionary ladder from humans or "sub human" if you will which can also be considered racist against humans.... or monkeys if you are a member of some unknown monkey superiority movement....

I wouldn't argue with you that if you called someone a monkey with the intent of referencing that term it would be racism.

I would argue that if you call someone a monkey with the intent of displaying them as stupid, or dumb or ugly or whatever, I don't see how that is ever racism.

So the end result is that just because someone infers racism in a comment, doesn't mean any exists.

Take the N-word. Lots of people call lots of other people the N-word. Sometimes it's across races, sometimes within races. While it has historical meaning, it is rarely spoken with that meaning. Ultimately today it is a form of slang, and slang often means different things to different people.

Racism only exists if it exists in the intent of the speaker.

Are you guys being dull on purpose? I don't get it.

Words have little meaning on their own, it's in the context they're applied to and the target they're referencig that makes something more or less offensive.

Everyone who's lived on this planet for a while knows that calling a black person a monkey has implications based on racial discrimination.

Now, for the application of purposedely racist jokes we could discuss the validity of its function to devalue the insulting power of theirs, but that's another topic.

edit: oh missed a page

During WWII the Japanese were refereed to as monkeys. Someone even posted an old propaganda carton a few pages back.

The Germans and the Italians were not.

Come to think of it the Japanese were depicted as darker they tend to be as well.

However aware of this we as individuals may be at this point, as a society or race, not so much. And without being aware of that, we're never going to get everyone on board. It's an "only as strong as our weakest link" type thing.

Judging each person individually is important.

But remembering that as a society we can only get as far as the worst of us who is still procreating is also something to keep in mind...

Dunno about that making you racist, but it certainly indicates other five letter words.

^

I judge anyone who uses it. Call it my personal quirk, I'm totally red flagging you if you're throwing that around in a non-ironic manner. It's even more awkward if you follow it up with a disclaimer. #facepalm

Notice neither of you really answered the question (Milamber says idk) but all of you sought some degree of ridicule.

For the record I know some people who refer to me and their friends as "my n*gga". I never interpret it as "racist".

Lawyers who are out to make a quick buck on the concept of racism (Al Sharpton comes to mind in a flash, Jesse Jackson too, but he isn't a lawyer I don't believe).

Advocate groups who thrives on segregation.

Companies who keep pandering to a specific group of people based on the color of their skin.

So on, so forth.

I'm not sure either, though I can imagine a few different scenarios and I'm fairly confident one of them is what he's referencing.

Because we live in reality where context is king.

Calling your BFF a dumb gorilla isn't going to be seen as racist.
Making a comment under your breath that the black person serving you is a dumb gorilla is going to get you in hot water.

Context. It's a thing. Treat people with the respect they deserve but don't be surprised if making certain loaded racial remarks garners you alot of problems.

Racism 'ends' when we start offering similar *economic* and *social mobility* options to all races, not parsing what comes out of every shitdribblers mouth.

Part of the problem with any equality movement is that you have two camps:

Camp 1: People who encourage true equality through love and understanding, protesting peacefully as needed. (Gandhi, MLK, etc.)

Camp 2: People who force equality down your throat with anger, name-calling, and threats. Often quote Gandhi, MLK, etc. but clearly miss the point.

Camp 1 is more effective at actually changing people. Camp 2 is probably just as effective at changing legislation, but entrenches its opponents further. Thanks to the internet and other media, Camp 2 is drowning out the voices of Camp 1.
